Reply:good job BUENO !
Reply:Lets keep this in a language that ALL can understand.Typing in native tounge is rude and i dont think right for a english speaking board. And to the OP,  i would get rid of that tyre that may catch fire from sparks or smoke up.Tyre smoke.............yuk
Reply:Sorry I dint meant to bother anyone here, i'm just asking toSoldador if this kind of stand tends to move when making preasure grinding ?. I''m also thinking of to make something similar and i'm planning to add weight filling the tire with cement  to make it more stable.Sorry again.Viva Mexico Cabrones, Fernando LopezElectronics Engineer"Miren lo  que mi cabezita de algodon hizo para sus nenas"

Reply:I have one similar that pop made years ago with an old truck wheel.  The tire was removed.  It works good.  A little vibration, but no biggie.  I have another that was made with an old big rig brake disc and used to have one made from a brake drum too that we sold with another machine on it.  Good use of old junk and remnant pipe.   I would probly leave the tire on it as long as it's still holding air ok and just not do any arc welding right near it.   The grinding wheel sparks will be small enough and cool enough by the time they land on the tire I doubt they'll smoke it.The spanish typing doesn't bother me at all.  I can even read some of it.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:The idea leaving the tire on the rim is to reduce vibrations and at same time making more stable stand, as you can see in the pictures the floor is not level. I will consider the problem with the sparks puting on a leather blanket or something (fireproof)Other motive to leave the tire on rim is to easy moving it. I don't have a properly shop, is more like a warehouse behind my house, and I need to move the stand one place to anohter. The tire helps to do that . Locobiker... Thaths why I think it is not a good idea at least for me to fill the tire whit cement. Attached ImagesLast edited by Soldador; 09-22-2009 at 10:43 [email protected]
Reply:The stand has other uses. As a drill stand, even the holes work with the grinder and the drill. And I work with car axles very often, so I'm going to make another stand. Attached [email protected]
Reply:Leave the tire on. No way in he!! will it catch fire UNLESS you poor an accelerant on it and then spark it. A measly bench grinder is not throwing out a heavy molten chips.I have one in my shop with the tire on as well. Keeps vibrations to a minimum and provides a very sound footing.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything

Reply:I have a small vise mounted on a stand like that... with the tire still on.  I built it probably 6 years ago, and have used it for drilling, grinding, MIG welding, Arc welding, O/A cutting, you name it and it hasn't caught on fire yet.  I've had the oily metal chips that accumulate around the base start smoking when a piece of hot metal or slag lands in it... but never any trouble with the tire.  It makes it easy to move around...  It's actually one of the handier things I've built.  The vise makes it really versatile.  I've used it as the base for a small welding table, and  portable tool stand. I even used it as a temporary base for my mailboxes for a couple of days after they got flattened by a truck.  I think you get the idea...  It's handy, and I don't think you'll have a problem with the tire.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:Well, since you've got wheels and rims and axles laying around ...... I was at a junkyard in California, and saw a really neat shop stool.  The guys had taken a regular car wheel/tire and filled it with cement for stability, then welded on a stub axle from a Cadillac. Then, they took a van seat, complete with armrests, and welded it to the Caddy spindle.  The axle was just long enough so the tire could be used as a footrest, although I saw another one they made at the same place with a curved bar like a salon chair. And I agree with Broccoli .... sometimes the English is less clear than the other languages, although I recognize a few words here and there in LocoBiker's post.  (Especially the "cabrone" ... ain't it funny how when ya learn a new language, ya learn the bad words first?)Last edited by SpyGuy; 09-23-2009 at 02:18 AM.
Reply:I've got three of those, minus the tire, that my father-in-law made 30-40 years ago, long before I took up welding.  They are great, compact, handy, easy to move around.  The grinder is on one of them,  the other two have adjustable height rollers.Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210
Reply:Looks good. The only thing I would do different is to knock the corners off the top front of the I beam. I can see something grabing and yanking my hand down at those corners if you installed a wire wheel or such on it. I'd just angle them back at like 45 deg. to remove the knuckle busters..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I have found the way to eliminate nearly all grinder vibration:I mount a 12"x12 square of plywood to the top of the stand and to the bottom of the grinder. Then I glue a piece of 1"  thick  high density foam between the two boards.  You will not believe how well this works.  Except for a little vibration at a specific speed when starting up or shutting down, there is no vibration in the stand at all.  The works equally well for a grinder on a bench.  I have a grinder dedicated to sharpening knives that is mounted to a 12"x24" board with foam underneath and I don't even have it glued or bolted down, it just sits there.  No vibration, none.MillerMatic 252, HTP 221 w/cooler, Hypertherm PM45, Lincoln IdealArc 250 AC/DC"I'd like to believe as many true things and as few false things as possible"

Reply:As promised my humble but effective grinder stand.  It began life in a School District Shop with a paint shaker on it.  I got it at auction, sold off the paint shaker and was even... drilled two holes and mounted down the Baldor.  To use it for any length of time I roll it out the shop door so it easier to clean up the debris.  Base is 23" across ( a semi or 2 ton wheel?) and the pipe is about 10" across.  It doesn't vibrate much, too much mass, but I think the plywood idea might be just the ticket. Soldador:   Habla en espanol esta bien aqui.  Ya' gotta understand, this guy is IN Mexico working as a real welder, in a cramped little shop probably making beautiful gates and nice things and doing the truck repairs too. He does this with little or no equipment, lots of found object adapted tools etc.    I live near the border, and this "make do, can do"  thinking is  called " the Mexican way".  This is NOT said to dis the effort, far from it... it acknowledges the will to make do and survive and try to do good work even if the odds are long.  I respect it.  My amigos tease me that I do things "the German Way".  Hell for stout and beauty be darned.  How true  It's the Krueger in me.    Enuf spouting off... enjoy the stand.
