Colorful welds on mild steel. What causes them?

When I was in the class at HTP welding we started on a butt joint of .050 mild steel. 4 people in my group and 3 of us had say normal looking beads. The last guy moved SUPER slow, just his style I guess, but he had all the blue, purple, gold colors. Reply:Im not a metalurgist, but too much heat can be a bad thing.  Something I found very interesting that can explain your question in great detail is this book by the James F. I didn't, because of the cost, and I have another friend who, for a living, tig welds SS in restaurants, school kitchens, etc. He said he will teach me any time I want at no cost."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:That makes sense. I noticed when I try doing a T joint and walking the cup is the only time I got some colors.
