Hey guys, I plan on welding a stainless pipe to a cast iron exhaust manifold, I know this question sorta comes up semi-regularly, but this one has a twist.First off, is 99% nickel rod a good plan for cast iron to stainless, or should I be using     309L? (I will likely run stringers and use pre/post heat either way).  If the nickel rod is the filler of choice, well, I have some, but it is 3/32 stick rod. I could drag out the stinger and stick weld it, but I'd rather TIG it. I would rather not have to special order some pure nickel tig rod at 2 weeks lead time and 35 bucks a pound, especially since i have cast99 sitting in a tube at the shop. Can I (carefully) clean the flux off of a couple of these stick rods and use them for tig? I don't see why not, just thought I'd ask. Maybe getting it clean enough to avoid tungsten contamination is next to impossible. Or would 309L be better, since since I am welding 304 tubing to the manifold? Thoughts? Mockery? Etc?
Reply:Knock the flux off and butter the cast with ni99, then use 309L for the stainless to ni99 joint.

Reply:Ok cool, thanks guys- so just welding a bit at a time, I  basically "surface" the cast iron side of the weld joint so I have a very nickel-rich "layer" to weld to, and then weld the stainless pipe on with 309?So I am just running a bead along where the weld joint will be basically? I am melting the base iron I assume?Sorry for dumb questions...
Reply:You got it.

Reply:Yeah pictures! What is this goin in?Yup
Reply:Cheers guys, the least I can do is post pictures for exchange for the help! You guys are great. A guy whp doesn't have the dough to buy one of my stainless volvo turbo manifolds wants to run an external wastegate using a stock cast iron manifold, so I am going to cut a hole in the manifold and weld a pipe on. It will look exactly like this (done by someone else and ceramic coated):
