Well, here it is
.my welding cart. I wanted a cart to hold my MIG, TIG and plasma cutter. I also wanted some storage space and a work surface/tool tray so I designed this cart with spaces tailored for my machines and drawers for consumables, cables, abrasives, etc. This has been a really fun project that has taught me a lot and helps to keep stuff organized in the garage/shop.Pic 1: Frame tacked up. Frame is 1 x 1/8 wall CS tubing. I used my woodworking miter saw with a metal cutting, bonded abrasive wheel to cut the tubing... but I wouldnt recommend this. Its pretty scary. Lots of sparks, lots of noise, plastic parts on miter saw melting. Its an accident waiting to happen. I need a better way to cut tubing. Also, the 1/8 thick material was overkill. I could have gotten by with 16 ga. for both the tubing and the drawer stock and shelves.Pic 2: Sheet metal cut out for shelves and drawers. I used 10 ga hot rolled CS. I rough cut it with the plasma then trimmed it on a milling machine. The hot rolled was a mistake. Well, sort of. Hot rolled is fine but I should have specd pickled and oiled. Trying to drill, mill, sand on glass hard mill scale is a PITA. Pickled and oiled is still hot rolled steel but you pay a little more for the mill to remove all the scale
.money well spent in my opinion.Pic 3: Drawer fronts cut out. I used polished aluminum diamond tread. Looks really great and easy to work with. Only problem is that I should have matched the diamond pattern from one shelf to the next
sort of like matching wallpaper. If you look at the pictures of the assempled cart youll see that the pattern is not continuous all the way down
or maybe thats just my OCD showing. Attached ImagesMiller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Reply:(continued)Pic 7: Frame and drawers painted (Krylon battleship grey), drawers installed, accessories installed. I used 100 lb, full extension drawer slides from Home Depot. Ive used these on other projects and love them but Im not sure if theyll hold up as they use ball bearings for the slide
might not last long in a dusty, abrasive environment. The diamond tread strip on the right is a bracket to hold power outlets. Ive got three 220V facing in for the machines and one 120 facing out for grinders/drill/whatever. A MotorGuard filter for the plasma cutter is in the lower center. Ill be adding some sort of cable holders to sort out the rats nest of TIG/MIG/Plasma/Work cables currently piled on top. Any ideas?Pic 8: Different view showing air filter, back of power outlet strip and tank chains. I left the top of the cart unpainted as its going to get abused anyway.Pic 9: All machines installed, tanks installed, everything plugged in and ready to go. See how the diamond pattern doesnt line up. Oh well

Reply:Very nice build. Maybe some cable hangers on the sides?
Reply:Fine cart... Like the diamond plate touch... What's it weigh?
Reply:looks nice took some thought
Reply:Metalbndr - ya, it screams for cable hangers. The right side is no problem..maybe a half-round from some pipe capped with diamond plate...one for the TIG and one for the plasma. The left side could be a problem as the MIG cable probably can't take a small bend radius and it has to mount below the MIG to allow access to the swing up door on the Millermatic.Mudbugone - What's it weigh?!? Well, let's just say that the wheels on the back are the second set. The first were semi soft rubber and only rated for 50 lbs....result was two flat tires. The current ones are rated for 400 lbs each. Ya, it's heavy. Way overdesigned. Should have used 16 ga all around instead of the armor-plate 10 ga. The drawers alone would probably stop most small caliber rounds.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:I saw a cart not too long ago that had a swing out side panel for access...that might work on the side where you need to get to the wire to change it..Might work on both sides for that matter. It was hinged and used bolts with T-handles screwed into nuts welded to the frame to lock the panel in place. I like the tower design and plan on something similar..except I want to add bars and side panel locks for security reasons. A thief might steal one machine... But it'd be a real chore to take them all if they were locked into a security cage which could be chained to something stationary.I'm a little paranoid since I lost $1600 worth of air tools and stuff a few years ago...

Otherwise I would be at Home Depot getting a cord reel or looking in the garden dept for a hose holder. Those machines are in no danger of sliding out or off the cart are they? The thread showing the tig wire holders was good, but overkill. I dont know why a guy would need that many or use them so often that you would have to keep them stored like that. I suppose if I had a welding business...I would store them differently. That design is awesome. I'm interested in building something very similar. I really like the storage idea. I'm trying to figure out by your photos the rough dimensions of the front base rectangle. It appears to be roughly 22"x24". Could you verify those and also the tank deck size. Again, awesome cart.

Reply:In desperation, when I bought my first welder, a small 110V Lincoln and some spendy tanks to go with it... I found a small abandoned shopping cart with good rollers. Chrome, plastic basket etc... there are 1000s of them everywhere I suppose. Anyway I cut the front off the basket and mounted the little welder on a pad down low where your Cokes go, Then I cut round holes thru in front of the child sitting area in the main part of the basket and mounted the two bottles safe and sound. The consumables go in the child seating pretty good as do gloves etc. It rolled around real good even worked ok on a fairly hard bed of ABC. I didn't know any better so I used and enjoyed it. Course now that IR a "Welding Web" welder of sorts I will have to build a much better one myself... hard to beat this one, very fine job, real keen!
Reply:Shopping carts! Dammit PapaLion....why didn't you speak up last month. You could have saved me all that trouble.Seriously, thanks for the attaboy. I'll be adding some 304 sst 1" sq tube handles in the near future plus some alum cable holders...just because I want to play around w/ stainless and aluminum. Reply:Here is my first "welding cart" When it got built, it took well over an hour for me to clean it up, cut the front of the basket off, drill some holes on the lower level to mount the welder on a plate and then cob out the holes for the tanks. It is a cart of sorts, shopping, welding, junque? Note; NO welding skills required at all, just a good eye with the 4" Makita. It is stable and rolls around well, it functions, form or not. On MyTractorForum.com I was browsing and saw another one, not cut up even with a little Lincoln riding in it... and there were some positive comments... so other folks have had this "bright" idea too. The maiin point here is that those of us born in WEST Texas (regardless of where we live now) are minimalists at heart. We just make do with what is at the ranch laying about, no fanfare atall (Maybe it is the German influence?). Ask the folks in Marfa they'll tell you all 'bout minimalists. Now EAST Texas, especially Houston proper is a whole other kinda' duck. They got style and grace over there, education and breeding (some French in the pedigree maybe?) So just naturally they prefer a Welding cart which reflects their good taste and skills. So case rested, the one from Houston is extraordiare', while mine is simply humble (cowboy kicks a little sand to show his humility).P. Reply:Looks totally functional from where I'm setting. I saw carts similar to this at a pet store http://cnaertai.en.alibaba.com/produ...ping_Cart.htmlThe older versions I saw were even better.. flat shelves top & bottom and more basic in design rather than stylish/modern.When I saw them first thing I thought...great welder cart! No modifications needed...Load & Go!They are designed to carry those tote around shopping baskets...

I try to speak well of my Texas brothers in Houston as they are often the "sensitive kind" (John Mayall) and sure it could be the New Orleans influence. Reply:Karlgabel,I made the power strip by connecting 4 metal utility boxes with conduit nipples...three boxes facing in for the 220 outlets and one facing out for the 110 outlet with the cord running out of the bottom.. I cut a piece of diamond tread aluminum and bolted the three 220's to it. Then I cut a rectangular hole in the bottom end of the aluminum for the 110. I cut the aluminum about an 1 1/2" wider than the width of the boxes and drilled mounting holes down that side. I drilled mating holes in the leg of the cart and bolted the strip w/ 1/4 20 hex head bolts. Papalion,I really appreciate your comments and almost let it go to my head. Then I went out to the garage and tried my hand at TIG welding a tee joint on 1/8 aluminum...ended up looking like really shiny dog poop. Needless to say, I won't be posting any pictures of the results of that humbling exerience. Luckily the cart is made of carbon steel otherwise it would be a steaming heap of worthless scrap. Aluminum is a BITCH (at least for me so far). I've been practicing running beads on an 1/8" flat aluminum bar and they are coming out great...stack-o-dimes and all that stuff. But the minute I try to join two separate pieces it all goes to hell. I think I'll just go to bed.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
