Hinges for driveway gate

I need to make a gate for my driveway, prob 12 ft swinging gate 3 ft high.  will be made from 2x2 1/8 box.  How do i hinge it?  Where do i get hinges? Thanks--scottMiller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 135harris oxy/propane torch
Reply:I buy my hinges at my local metal supplier. They sell very heavy duty barrel hinges that you weld on. They have brass bushings as well. Let me go snap a picture and show you. Reply:These are the ones I use. They have a flat side for welding onto your gate and your post. If you weld them in the same orientation as in the pin pointint up, you can lift the gate up and off the hinges for repairs or replacement. If you welt them in opposed orientation, one pin up and one pin down the gate will have to be cut off. Reply:You might want to post a sketch of what you're planning here.  1/8" 2x2 might be overkill for the application, making the gate more prone to (weight) sag and possibly more likely to hurt a kid.  Also maybe mention what you're attaching it to -- a pole you're sinking into concrete, or an exisiting wall, or what.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:I'll see if i can do a drawing of some kind.  The gate won't be anything elaborate. After talking to the wife and doing some measuring, where i wanted to put it would have been a 12 ft gate.  Where she wants to put it will be 20 ft, so I'll be building 2 10ft gates.  Yes, they will attach to 3x3x3/16 set in concrete.  I researched some on some gate mfg websites, looks like 3ft deep with outriggers is how they do it.  Does that sound right?  The only reason I was thinking 2x2x1/8 is because i have a bunch of it sitting here.  the gates will be simple, 10ft x 3ft rectangle braced in the center with some chain link filling in the open area.  ThanksMiller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 135harris oxy/propane torch
Reply:look at king first and then compare if you only need 4 it might be worth buying localbut you can get an idear what you need for size and weight from king
Reply:I would honestly put your posts atleast 6 ft deep and as big as you can make your holes. (width wise) You never know what you might want one day. I'm a contractor and do it this way easier to over build than underbuild. I try and plan for the unexpected.
