So I've spent some time looking around and seing what's on the market for MIG welders. Currently, I'm using a harbor freight dual MIG 151 welder. It's about 120 amps, 230V, gas/gasless, I've only ever hit the overcurrent condition once and it cooled off quickly. So, this thing has been working great for me for about $150 invested in the thing. Now that I've welded a lot of things with it, I've considered upgrading to a nicer unit since because everyone on here seems to swear by their Miller, Lincoln, etc. welders. My question is, should I bother upgrading? Will these produce better welds than my harbor freight welder or does the extra price go for things like dependablity and support?
Reply:im sorry but if it aint broke dont fix it.....
Reply:in a way i agree with weldbead and in another way i disagree. i disagree because with a new machine you will most likley notice a difference in the way it performs and feels. ive never run anything but lincoln and miller wire feeds but i have used a cheap c-h stick machine. i can tell you going from that to a lincoln ac225 was like night and day. do you know anyone with a higher end machine you could try?Millermatic 211weldpack 3200 squirtgunsquare wave 200victory journeyman kitHypertherm 30xptoo much other crap to listtinkerer extraordinaire

Reply:Since you asked the question, apparently it is not a pressing situation. Thus, keep checking classified resources and get a great deal on a used machine. I would definitely upgrade if I had 220 v capability already and a machine that is under powered. There would be a positive noticeable difference between your machine and a upgrade.
Reply:Just found out Home Depot has a Lincoln wirefeed welder you can rent for cheap. I'll have to go try and that and see what it's all about. |
