Hi,I picked up a Syncrowave 250 for not much money - the transformer style. The problem is that my shop only has a 50A breaker for it, and the machine would be happier with a 100A one. My question is if I should sell it, save up, and get a TA185, which requires only 50A at max output. Is the TA185 a better machine? Thoughts? I like to weld steel, stainless and aluminum primarily. Thanks!
Reply:I never used a syncro, but have the TA185. It kicks butt. 1/4" aluminum is max.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Check the cost of an electrical upgrade. That would be less than saving for the TA. I had a 100amp ckt put in for my Sync, but it was so long ago that I don't remember the cost. And it's just plugged in with one of those 50amp plugs.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:What a toss-up!!! The Syncho will definitely run hotter than a TA 185. It's also an amp hog. The TA has adjustable freq., pulse built in, so it has some advantages. I have an Invertec 205. It is the basic equivalent of a TA 185. My welder is maxed out on 1/4" sheet, it can do 3/8 and 1/2" if the pieces are bracket sized, and not big pieces. The synchro at Spectre boats I have straight cooked 1/2" engine mount brackets that were very big chunks of aluminum. With all things being equal, and say you don't do much thick aluminum, I would save the money for any of the inverter welders. They all run WFO- max output on a 30A 240 circuit. And that is barely enough to wake a synchro up in the morning. My invertec costs me maybe $20-30 a month to run. The synchro at the shop costs $10 a day to run. It's a big energy savings in the long run.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
