burned a few different rods and took pitchers.ist foto left to rightn 1/2" plate..6010 85 amps dcep  --very cold6010 95 amps 6011ac 90 ampsshort arc6011 whipped  i dont see a differrence Attached Images
Reply:oops-next 2 beads are 7018 85 amps dcepnxt two fotos burned 7018 till it got dark..
Reply:So which one did you prefer?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Think you need many more amps to go at 1/2 material.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:apologies, i didnt post this very well. 2nd foto is  (2) 6013 beads on left, (2) 7018 beads on right, both 90 ampstimberwolf  no question if this was, 1/2" fillet or similar,  would've used 1/8 at 140 plus--this was  somew 3/32 , just  pad work.. david, i gotta say the 6013 and 7018  both start and go down real nice, 6013 slag comes off by itself and 7018 needs just a bitof help, hard to say which of those i prefer..
Reply:Keep at it with the 7018, the slag will peel when you got it.  Did you grind the plate?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:My mistake, I had it my brain you were at the low end for 1/8 rod rather than upper end for 3/32.How would it do with just a little more heat though and feeding in a little quicker?Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:david plate was rusty but not scaly so i just wirebrushed. timberwolf, i was cooking the 3/32-the 6011 i was using has a white flux..burned half a rod and what was left in the stinger  was dark dark grey..i will try some 7018  hotter and faster..if im trying to put in a single stringer i go at a certain pace..when im trying to fill in a wider slot between two stringers, i go slower and watch it fill.weave a little side to side...just trying to kiss the 2 stringers, not overlap  onto them...i sometimes just sit  mindlessly and burn rod for an hour..
Reply:ran some 3/32 7018 at 100 amps, faster than previous ..slag came off pretty much  by iteslf.. Attached Images
Reply:Those look good, but the slag should be more even.  I don't know what you are doing, but the slag should be as smooth as the weld.  100 amps is plenty.  Looking better, especially when you clean the plate.I am guessing by the spatter the arc is way too long.  Hold the rod so its almost touching the puddle.  7018 is a short arc rod.  You can almost drag it. David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I was taught to drag a 7018 just as close as possible, you'll feel it eat. I love 7018's.  I have noticed the same slag appearence, sometimes smooth as glass, other times just like in the pics. I figured it was different brands of rods that gave different results as that I think I was using different batches.
Reply:sometimes i drag the 7018 but most of the time i use a small circular pattern
Reply:dont see why  you cant do both..will go play with it..
Reply:If 7018 is dry the slag should be a nice tan color and peal off easy, if the rod is old and wet the slag may start to get grey and be sticky. Try baking the rod for bit before and see if that makes a difference. I was over on a friends last week while he was doing a weld test on sched 80 pipe with 7018 and there was a big difference between some rod that had been sitting on the truck for a while and fresh dry rod.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:Nice 7018s. I love 7018. One thing i learned dont think it will really matter to any of you but never reuse a 7018 electrode once its already been struck. When restruck it will cause slag inclusions on you rrestart. This probley only would be important on structual applications.
Reply:i find a new rod starts easy..a half rod can be difficult, even if you break off slag to expose metal...i say bad words..

Reply:I think the first 7018 I had to play with was rod which was mostly over 50% long discarded lengths. I didn't need it for low H. work so just used it as-is and had little trouble starting if I scratched through the thin glassy coating which had formed on the end. Then I found a new 50# box of 5/32", another of 1/8" which had been discarded at a job site where I was helping with some refrigeration work. Are you a 'dumpster diver'??
Reply:i cant remember when i  bought anything (material not tools-i bought some tools)...i started with some discarded half-50 lb boxes of 6010 and 7018 like you say abandoned. but have bought many 10 lb boxes  since of 6010,6011,6013,7014,7024 hobart rod from tractor supply ...tig wire, o/a and argon from lws..
