I had some diamond tread aluminum laying around so I decided to make some cable hangers for my welding cart. Pic 1: Took some 3" x .125" wall 6061, sliced off 3" sections and cut them in half lengthwise.Pic 2: Got lots of practice on aluminum fillets doing these.Pic 3: Still not the best looking beads but getting better all the time.Pics 4 & 5:Lot's better now. Don't have all those cables laying all over the place. Reply:Looking good.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:Thanks guys. The fillet welds on alum are kicking my butt. I'm not worried about the welds failing as I've pounded the crap out of several coupons and they held just fine (and anyway, these are just cable hangers). My problem is consistancy and appearance....I want neat, uniform ripples every time and so far it's been pretty much hit or miss. Butt welds and corner welds are not that big a deal. Not perfect (read ZTFab) but good looking anyway. But those fillets are going to take lots of practice.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
