10am eastern have a weld test, 2" carbon pipe with stainless 308 rod. Haven't done this before. Do I need to purge the pipe like normally do for stainless pipe?
Reply:If you're running TIG, yes. Stick, no.
Reply:Carbon steel pipe with 308 stainless rod? Thats a strange one?Stainless pipe will require back shielding if tig welded. Carbon steel pipe will not require back shielding if tig welded.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Our technique sheet for welding carbon steel pipe with stainless filler requires an argon back purge.
Reply:If your using stainless filler, yes, you will require a back purge for sure.I just found it strange to weld carbon steel pipe with stainless filler. Much more expensive than using 70s-2 or 70s-6 filler. The mild steel filler costs much less and doesn't require a back purge.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Just out of curiosity what is the application that requires 308 ss rod on carbon pipe? I was always taught that 308 did not bond correctly to carbon. We use 309 or er70s generally.
Reply:It's probably for the same reason our copper nickle test is done on carbon steel pipe with CU NI filler just to see if you can run the filler maybe? |
