My wife and I bought our house back on '02 ( or '03, I forget). Front porch has those cheesy twisted flat bar and channel crap-tastic box store rails and a broken gate. They have bugged the s*** out of me since we moved in. Every time I look at them I throw up a little.Work's been a little slow, so...A little time at the drawing board and we came up with this. The design closely matches the pattern of the stained glass in our new front door's window.Top rail = 1-3/4" molded cover rail with 1/4" x 1" h. r. flat bar.Legs =1-1/2" x 11g sq. tubeBottom rail & gate perimeter = 3/8" x 1-1/2" h. r. flat barPickets = 1/2 h. r. solid sq. bar.More pics coming right up.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Here's some more.So the porch has rails on 3 sides, 2 short and 1 long. This is the short end with the gate. The other short end will look real close to this but no gate, and the arch will drop enough to let the cover rail run level. The long side is basically 2 short sides made into one long piece. More pics coming soon. (but I have to build more rail first)Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Thats gonna look real good, what kind of finnish are you going to use?MAC WS1110 Mig WelderWoodworker HobbyistDelta 10" Table Saw, Delta Planer, Bosch and Craftsman Routers, 48" Craftsman Lathe, drill press, 1/2" hand and cordless drills, scroll saw, skill saws, jig saws, etc, and too many hand tools to list, lol
Reply:Thanks. They're going to get low gloss black, or dark bronze (duradonic bronze?) powder coat. The coater's shop I've been dealing with does great work for great prices. I can't hardly paint them for what he charges me.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:NICE, I would like to do something like that.I would bolt it to a concrete porch, but i am concerned about rust staining the concrete over time. What would one do to stop rust stain? Powder coat?Keep the pictures coming.
Reply:Great job, nothing like seeing it from plan to completion, thanks for posting.
Reply:hiI don't comment on projects much, unless i see something really good/nice but when i saw the drawings for this project and seeing it all done..i am quite impressed with the gate you have made.good work and I'm sure it will add value to your home.
Reply:looks good.how do you bend the radius bars for the top?Do you have a special jig for that?   guess you would bend 2 long pieces the same then cut them... ?greenhorn question... I know... Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:Pleasing looking design there Brian.  The arched elements nicely set off against the rectangular 'Craftsman' look.  (That's Craftsman as related to the Arts-and-Crafts Movement and Mission design and Gustav Stickley, not Sears    )As another poster asked, I'm also curious as to how you bent the arches.  Ring-roller and then cut off arcs as you need them?I'm also curious as to whether all the joints will be fully welded all-around or if just the tacks will be left and also if the welds will be ground flush on the 'faces' of the panels. The panel/picket spacing does meet the applicable fence safety 'spacing' code of 'won't pass a 4 inch diameter sphere', right?  The pics a just a might bit blurry and I can't make out the markings on the ruler/yardstick.  Design-wise, for the 'short' side opposite the side with the gate, maybe instead of running the top rail across the entire span and dropping the center arched section below it how about making it a complete match for the gated section except put in 'dummy' hinges or small spacer blocks and have the center 'gate' section of the panel be fixed in place and non-operable?  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Most definatly an inspiration for a future project I have in the works.  Very nice job man.Come try it out and stay a while.
Reply:Very nice job and look. Around here our powder coat guys, we use Action Powder Coating. Send their iron out for flame spray zinc to their sister shop. It is rather inexpensive. They take the whole job in a giant room with a bunch of other projects. And sand blast them first. Then they flame spray the zinc on. That will last about twenty years with ordinary black paint on them without painting. Less with white paint. White paint or powder coating will leech some zinc, that leaves slightly visible greyish runs after a year or two. Especially bad near salt water or salt spray. http://www.actionpowdercoat.com/Acti...dercoating.htm       Sincerely,             William McCormickLast edited by William McCormick Jr; 03-22-2010 at 03:44 PM.
