Thought I would post these, but nothing special. Just testing out my Hypertherm Powermax 1000 on some 1/2 steel.Something about melting metal that gets me excited. Reply:Yesssss, cutting METAL with a Plasma is the Shizzzzz.  Those Drag tips are SO easy to use.Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:Its a drag shield on the Powermax1000. The nozzle (some call it a tip) is located above the shield....the shield is electrically isolated so that there is no arcing from the nozzle (tip) to the plate. When arcing occurs, the torch sticks, creating a rough cut when you have to overcome the stiction. Arcing from nozzle to plate also damages the nozzle. All of the Hypertherm torches except the Powermax30 and Powermax190 use shield technology (invented at Hypertherm by the way!), longer consumable life and easier drag cutting. You can call it a tip if you want though!  Glad you like it....now throw some 1-1/4" steel (stack it up if needed) and show us some HD cuts!I was just thinking yesterday when I was dropping an Oak tree on my property for next winters firewood....I was using my Husqvarna chain saw......which I bought years ago to replace a Sears (Poulain) chain saw. No substitute for quality when you really want performance out of your tools. The Poulain saw cut wood....but the Husky cuts wood way faster and with less operator effort. Its hard to explain ....but you can compare low cost import plasmas with Hypertherm plasmas the same way.Best regards, Jim Colt Originally Posted by jmanYesssss, cutting METAL with a Plasma is the Shizzzzz.  Those Drag tips are SO easy to use.

Reply:The Powermax30 does not need shield technology....there is not an issue with stiction or arcing from the nozzle to the plate when you are cutting at 30 amps or less. I also own a Powermax30.....great little machine. A lot of power in a package the size of a toaster!Jim Originally Posted by jmanOH Ok... that makes sense to me.  I have the 30 but probably should have bought the 45 considering ALL the steel that I've now found to CuT!!  Anyhow, I love that freakin' PLASMA cutter.  I can cut 48oz copper and 1/8" steel about as fast as I can run the torch.  The cuts are Brilliant on everything from Galvanized steel to plastic coated Aluminum will little or no dross if you have the amperage and travel speed right.  Cutting the 1/4" and thicker materials took a bit more to get used to, as you have to slow it down pretty good but yeah, I couldn't be happier with it.Cheers,/J...
