Hi there, I would like to build a lightweight simple tow dolly like the pictures attached. I have got some 1999 dodge caravan rear hubs and wheels and plan on building the main cross beam out of 2x2. The car I want to tow around is under 2500 lbs. What wall thickness would be best for something like this for the 2x2thanks Attached Images
Reply:I would recomment around 3/8", but you could probably get away with 1/4". personally i tell people to stay away from that type of trailer and to either rent a real car trailer or just buy one/build oneI break things for a living...
Reply:I've made a few trailer based projects using old boat trailers. They're cheap or free and you get a lot of steel just by towing it away.HobbyistSS/Aluminum cartATD 130 MIGEverlast 225 TIGSteel cartEverlast PP50 plasma cutterHarbor Freight 130 TIG/90 ArcHarbor Freight 100 Flux coreOxy/Acet
Reply:Even the factory ones are gonna wiggle apart, and they have their name and liability on it they are DANGEROUS AT THE LEAST never liked them either. too many stress loads on a single lil joint but if your an engineer and believe it will work and will put up your insurance coverage or house ,boat life.. LOL is not worth it .....even the local weld shops send them away broken won't fix em sooooo if you make one joint stronger than the next it don't flex it breaks again I do belive they harden them with the temp of the cleaners and even drying the paint in the hanging oven so do some research and probally will save some lives GOOD LUCKOH that looks like the rental yard ones they fix em just about every time they come back just talk to a few of em guys or look at how many welds are on top of each other but their in the business to make money not looking out for safety AT ALL!!!Last edited by Tony D; 04-11-2010 at 10:31 AM.Lincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a Hypertherm POWERMAX 30
Reply:I just finished a tow bracket that bolts to my Integra. The Integra is about the same weight you're talking about and has no frame. It's all sheet metal and welding to it would not be strong enuff. The bracket is about 4' wide with 2 'A' frame going forward to a connecting cross bar that has the towing eyes. The tow bar is from Harbor Freight, $39 on sale and it's more than strong enuff for this car.HobbyistSS/Aluminum cartATD 130 MIGEverlast 225 TIGSteel cartEverlast PP50 plasma cutterHarbor Freight 130 TIG/90 ArcHarbor Freight 100 Flux coreOxy/Acet |
