Reply:I welded quite a bit of thin aluminum in the old days with A/O. The very first thing you need to do is get a lens for your goggles that is made for welding aluminum. Regular lens do not absorb the orange flare from the flux and you can't see your puddle. They used to be cobalt blue lenses but those went away years ago. I can't remember the lens number of the present ones. The main trick is to learn to tell when the aluminum is melted. Until you do all you will do is melt holes as aluminum has no strength at all when molten. When it melts you have to go right then. After you get it figuered out you can make some really smooth welds.
Reply:so a neutral flame for aluminum and a carburizing flame for stainless, just like the video says?

Reply:They make a flux that you put on the weld area and bake it to hardness with the torch. When you put your heat on it to weld it the flux can be seen to puddle several degrees before the aluminum and you feed your filler and go. I have a weld on the bottom of my flat bottom boat that I did over twenty years ago that has held up all this time that was done this way.
Reply:Catbed, it is typically suggested that you weld aluminum with a slightly carburizing flame. You don't any chance of adding oxygen to the weld. There several vendor who sell those lenses (plastic ones) for a reasonable price. Do a search, it wasn't difficult to find. For a one- off, Just want to try it experience. You can weld with a standard lense. The Al, changes viscosity when it is ready to add filler. It will become very slick. Get a rhythm and you can do some decent welds. After blowing holes through a few pieces you will figure out when to start moving.
Reply:The best Web site I saw on oxy-acetylene aluminum welding is http://tinmantech.chainreactionweb.com/index.php. They also sell torches, TM2000 lenses, flux, rods, etc. You can buy everything separately or as a kit: http://tinmantech.chainreactionweb.c...s_id=55#prod55The guy (Kent White) also made excellent videos on O/A aluminum welding technics. You can either buy the videos directly from him at http://tinmantech.chainreactionweb.c...b8f41af6843022 or rent the DVDs here: http://smartflix.com/store/video/278...-The-DifficultLast edited by MichaelP; 10-11-2008 at 10:59 PM. |
