...nowhere right now, and certainly not to heaven, but it'll get delivered to Banner Elk, NC Monday. Yes, I did smack my head on the garage door track while I was welding up the rails.Stringers are 10" jr channel, landing is 10" jr channel on the stringer with the long cripple, 6" channel otherwise. Treads and landing are grip strut, 2' plank x 2" for the landing, 4' x 11-3/4" x 2" treads. Boy I'd hate to take a spill onto that stuff, ow! Rails are 1-1/4" sch 40 uncoated pipe.Last edited by app-ironworksllc; 12-04-2009 at 11:26 PM.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Brian, do you have engineered plans or just what fits?  I understand the layout of the steps (if made out of wood) but don't know how you would size the platform (landing) for steel.  Do you perform calculations on the size of steel vs size of platform?  Or is it just years of experience & overbuild a little bit?Just curious as the pic's you post look like a lot of head work goes into it.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:This set is replacing a rusty steel stair with poured concrete treads and landing so I just built it out of the same material as the old stair, except for replacing the sheet metal pans with grip strut. All I had to do was check with permits/inspections dept. for any special instructions. Technically I didn't even have to do that since I'm not installing this one, but it's smart to check that stuff anyway to avoid any unpleasant surprises.Normally I'd get drawings reviewed and stamped by a S.E., or if they're for a builder they'll usually supply drawings as spec-ed by an architect or engineer. One thing I've learned over the years is to always check the engineering if the drawings come from an architect, not all of them know materials as well as they think they do.  On commercial jobs I'll always get drawings stamped by a structural engineer after the steel is detailed, unless I'm lucky enough to be given a set already detailed and stamped.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Well the pics didn't show any big dents in the garage door track or the supports so that's a good thing.   I always try to absorb most of the force of the collision with my head so as to save the expensive metal works !!Stairs look great.
Reply:I wondered about if a S.E. had anything to do with it.  Glad to know they do, or if a replacement it's ok to use similar sized materials.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:The stairs look really great, as I would expect from viewing pics of your other work.  I'm anxious to start on a gate or two (inspired by your previous pics), and wondered where you buy your stock.  I would never purchase as much as you do, but would like to find a supplier in the Asheville area.Keep the pics coming.....Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210

Reply:Thanks, y'all.Well I got some paint poured on it.I used a new (to me) gun today.  Durablock 007 hvlp, all I can say is wow! I'm an old schooler when it comes to paint (well actually when it comes to pretty much anything) and have not had much success with hvlp in the past. This gun made it easy and used about 1/3 the amount of paint as my old gun. And there's a lot less over spray mess to clean up. Now all that's left is come back tomorrow and load it up so I can hit the road 1st thing Monday morning.Last edited by app-ironworksllc; 12-05-2009 at 06:37 PM.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Nice work.  I use a Earlex hv5000 spray station.  Having used two hvlp units prior to this one...it's astounding how much paint I have wasted over the years.  The can is also teflon coated inside for easy cleaning.
Reply:app-ironworksllcI used to build hundreds of stairs very similar to yours that were mobile the handrail could be removed and hung inside the container along with the stairs for transport. My treads were all bolted to the stringers which where I belived 12G or so sheet metal made to a 8" pan with 1" legs. The treads are extremely pricey don't recall exactly as the company I was contract with purchased them ahead of time I just built them. I did have a costumer want something similar though and called for prices and that is when I found out how much they were. Where did you get your step pads from and it also looks like you used the same material for the landing just a larger size. Out here all I have seen is grating that is rediculous money even without the galvdip. Reply:Originally Posted by app-ironworksllcYou're right Mr F. that stuff is pricey. This stair used the prefab "grip strut" treads and a 12' piece of "grip strut" plank from McNichols. IIRC it was over $650.00 just for the grip strut. I just priced a 4'-8" x 4'-8" piece of bar grating (1"x1/8" bars on 1-3/16" centers painted plain steel) to a customer for over $400.00. Their stuff's not cheap, but the quality and service are great.Something tells me that gen-set isn't too cheap either.

Reply:Originally Posted by Mr.FWell I know the little whisperwatt was about $3,800 Can't begin to tell you what the genset is worth. The Engine is the same 500 horse industrial that my other shop used on frac pumps and i think was $44,000 so figure the cost of the generator, container labor on container installing doors and vents plumbing fuel tank....yadayadayada, yes It is pricey

Reply:Here is its big brother. Best pic I could find. Container should have louvers in it between those two doors for air intake. But that is the size of it anyway. 18 cylinder if I remember correctly. I have a picture of one of the mufflers I will try and find that I modified to stuff inside the box. Reply:You see a lot of the 40' containerized Cat Generators over here in Afghanistan, they are stuffed with V18 CAT mills (3518 I think) spinning 3 megawatt generator heads.  They look similar to the one on the trailor.  They run relatively quiet, unless the service doors are open.Originally Posted by CavmastergunnerYou see a lot of the 40' containerized Cat Generators over here in Afghanistan, they are stuffed with V18 CAT mills (3518 I think) spinning 3 megawatt generator heads.  They look similar to the one on the trailor.  They run relatively quiet, unless the service doors are open.
