So finished that small reciever mount for that little winch of my dads, now I went and bought an old 5687 warn 8000LBS winch, got it for $150.00CDN I remember my dad used to have one on his big truck, so now because it is kind of old, they don't seem to have a matching mount for it, the reciever ones and bumper ones all seem to be for a different type of mounting system and the holes don't match up, so figure I will try and make my own reciever mount, just have to see how heavy of metal I should use.She is a bit of a heavy one for lifting as it is.
Reply:Me and my buddy used some 2x2x1/4 wall square tube. Some 1/2" Plate and Made the plates to mount behind the bumper. With a small stinger that comes through the bumper that the winch mount Slides into.TJ

Reply:What thickness steel did you use, Warn got back to me and said they don't deal with the old winches anymore as it was discontinued in 1974.Below is what they said:"Sorry, that winch was discontinued in 1974 and we no longer manufacture or service that model. I am not aware of anyone that manufactures a mount for the 6 bolt configuration and we do not recommend multi-mounts for the foot-forward style of winch that that is. Reply:Good info, I have the quick connector and I will have to look at my steel, I know I have some 1/2" steel plate, but probably would be too heavy, I figured I would weld all the stuff together as I am not really set up to bend anything really thick, all we have at work is a metal break for bodyshop stuff.
Reply:Sorry...a bit of a thread hi-jack...I just got a small (2500lb) winch that is receiver hitch mounted. I am using it to drag some firewood logs around at the cabin etc. I want to make the wires to the battery longer. Does anyone know where I can find these plugs?

Reply:At work we buy them all the time from NAPA. They have the smaller one that you have and a large one for big winches. Looks like the mount is coming along nicely.
Reply:digikey.com has a ton of connectors (not certain if they have yours) -- and they don't seem to mind sending out samples.

Reply:My only problem I gather from Warn is that mine mounts on the front, not the bottom. so that is a pile of torque pulling on a lip and not the base as in your pic of your mount.I am curious if I could rotate the right side one down as it does spin and mount it to the base and the left front one then would be the only one putting all that leverage on a front lip.Wonder if that would work?Last edited by partsman; 04-17-2010 at 02:23 PM.

Reply:Don't believe so, as mine has an oil fill hole at top and the oil lever near the bottom, takes a 30W non detergent, so if layed down it would not get the oil distributed to the areas requiring it, and I think that would be a real problem, I know when my dad had one he overfilled it, and it had to be taken apart and cleaned up.

Attached ImagesYes, I have a 180 arc welder at home and a gas setup also, at work we have a plasma cutter and a couple mig machines, I have never mig welded, but have acess to them if I asked the body guys, so I could probably fab it up, if not I could send it to our welding/machine shop, but that is not as easy as in the old days, and it may take them a while to have free time, plus I like the satisfaction of making things myself.

Reply:I wouldn't rotate the end plate. You should keep the mounts in plane with each other, to prevent any torque/twisting of the drum. Go with a heavier plate, i.e. 1/4" minimum, grade 8 mounting bolts, then build a cage around the front/sides to tie it all together.Then I think it should be fine. Reply:Much appreciate all the input, one of the problems seems to be that mine will mount to the front, a lot more torque than mounting on the bottom of a plate and being more of a shear load.

Reply:I called "famous maker" Winch company for parts once. A pleasant lady asked me for the unit's serial number. She asked us to be sure not to use the winch and said that we would be contacted with repair instructions. First thing the next morning.... pssshhhhhhttttt clang, rattle - a semi-trailer backed up to the door after an all-night red-eye run, with nothing aboard but one brand-new replacement winch, some freebees, and orders to pick up the old winch. All at no cost.Alfred said: "I hope you wrote down the serial number - cause next time we're working on a winch, we'll just call them and use the next consecutive number." Good Luck
Reply:Tony Mo, those connectors are made by SMH and Anderson, you can find 'em on ebay all the time. I see that one is marked CPE, never heard of that name but the size looks like it might be a 50 or 75 amp connector. One thing I've heard about those connectors is you have to match the colors, blue won't work with yellow, etc. I have a set of heavy jumper cables that hook to my truck's battery that uses a larger version of that connector, they're grey and are 175 amp rated. Reply:Sandy, I aint trying to stir up the pot here but the size and color both does matter. Sure, you can't plug a 50 into a 75 as they're different sizes. Now even though the connectors are the same size and amp rating, the mating end of the connectors are molded differently for each color with slightly different interlocking teeth. I have a pile of old battery cables that have the 175 amp connectors in blue, green, and grey that I've tried to connect an opposite color to, no go.
