Hi Everyone,I just bought my first welder and want to build a welding table as a first project. What type of steel should I use? Based on my research an Alloy Steel, 4130, would be best. Is this correct? Is 4130 alloy considered a mild steel?I am going to build something similar to this http://www.millerwelds.com/interests...welding-table/Thanks,Sean
Reply:I wouldnt use 4130.... 4130 is not mild steel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/41xx_steel look at 1018 or 1020 steel.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:What kind of welder ya got?  If it's a 110V wire feeder, I wouldn't go any thicker than 3/8".  If you can afford a 4130 table top, may as well get it blanchard ground too.  Just get some A36 like others have suggested.  And use beefy tube for the frame if you want the top kinda flat, because that A36 hot rolled has a curve to it.  I built my first table out of 1/2" A36 and 1/4" x 2" angle.  I thought that angle would be stiff enough to hold the plate flat
Reply:The LWS here has a Miller welding table thats about 30x30 it has slots for a clamping system and seemed like it was built very well. The sell for about $300 they had this one for $250 , was used in a trade show by miller for a few days.
Reply:What are you welding on it?  For 99% of welders, the cheapest piece of steel plate you can buy (or pick out of a scrap pile) is the best choice.  There is nothing all that high tech about a welding table.  It needs to conduct electricity, be relatively flat, and not catch on fire.Jack OlsenMy garage website
