My friend is picking up some mild steel to make a small cart to roll around 1000# masonry stones with.  The plan is to use 1/4" plate steel, heavy casters, and 1" round solid steel bar for the build.  I haven't seen the exact plan yet.  This device will not hurt anyone if it breaks, so I feel ok about welding it up. I plan on beveling the steel for the joints.  The welding will be done outside, it is not forecasted to be exceptionally windy this weekend.   My question is on which method would be the best.  I have a dynasty 200 and a MM200 at my disposal.  I have 100% Ar and C25 gas.  Also have ER70S6 .030 wire, flux core (?ET10), 7018 (3/32, 1/8 and 3/16), and 6011 (3/32, 1/8) stick.I could have a spare bottle filled with C5, but I've never done spray transfer with MIG.  So what method would you use on this job?  I'm preferring MIG with short circuit or globular transfer because of the ease, but I have a feeling that 1/8" 7018 is probably going to be the stronger weld.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:7018 schtick, and I am 6 B certified - that's bed frame welding!   so you get what you pay for. I am definitely waiting to find out why the laughter but I have a feeling it's anticipating dumb answers like mine. Btw, what's the 1" rod for?  Why not channel or I?
Reply:It may very well not hurt someone but... Who the h3ll wants to pick up a 1000 pounds of masonry bricks?

Reply:let me rephrase, 7018 stick assuming the 1" rod is somehow going to be used to reinforce the 1/4" plate.(applause, the crowd goes WILD!)Edit:  Originally Posted by ThorsHammerLike I said, Need more information in order to give constructive advice.
Reply:1" rod ?Left over reo from a construction site?Heat it and bend itWell that or like everyone one else on the planet ... use a wheel barrow (1 million brickies and landscapers cant be wrong)Last edited by Brett; 03-29-2012 at 04:36 PM.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:I havent seen the project yet.  All I know is that it is for moving very heavy blocks.  For some reason, he wants to use solid bar and not pipe.  It may be for wheel axles.  All I wanted to know is which type of welding would fit the bill.  I will post more specifeics when I have them.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:I also question the purpose of the 1" rod pending further info... I would use rect. tube or channel for the structural elements.Given your equipment and the need to work outdoors, I would vote for 7018.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:These parts are still not in my possession.  He wants the base to be a scrap piece of 1/4" stainless he has.  The alloy is unknown.  It seems like a giant waste of stainless steel.  Can I use stainless and weld it to mild steel with stick or ER70?  I do have a roll of stainless mig wire here as well, but no tri mix. I'm thinkiing the base should just be mild steel.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
