This is pretty close to the  finial I am using .   I have center section of the fence made ( took 6 hours to build a jig for that) I now have to get the finials welded onto the flat tops-lining up with each balaster perfectly, and obviously they need to be straight-centered and lined up exactly the same. I do not normally take on ornimental work, but this was a personal favor for one of my customers clients who offered to do T&M on the job so I took it. I have been welding for about 30 years and am no stranger to fixturing, but this one has me a little concerned. these finials are cast-they have flash and are not only a two sided arrow shape, but also are tapered through the body with a heavy rib. If I have to I can machine up a few feet of bar stock with that shape in it, but that will be a few hours of jagging around to do that, there must be a simple way to hold these that someone has come up with ?  I even considered making an impression in clay and that could be placed in a piece of channel. I think there is about 350 of them to do so I need to find a quick way to do this. I know you are all thinking that I should take my time on a T&M job, but I am about 8 weeks out on work right now and just cant spend the time on this.I have to say, this was my first stab at a real high end ornimental job like this, I really have alot of respect for you guys that do this every day, what a challenge. I have over 1000 pieces going into 75 feet of fence.Dan.Repair Specialties LLC

Reply:Sorry.  thanks for putting the pic up for me, thought it worked-should have double checked.   I machined a piece today to see how that would work, looks like I may have this figured out unless someone has a better way.Dan.Repair Specialties LLC
Reply:the question is how to hold them in place while welding?I dont know the answer, I only have questions....why dont you hold it with your hand and  tack it? Go down the line with 10 or 20 then step back and look for irregularities. You will get faster as you go.
