So, my buddy wants me to build him a bench similar to this one:http://www.smartfurniture.com/produc...urn-Bench.htmlIt is 2x1 rectangular tubing, not sure what the underlying support bar is.I plan on using 1/4"x2" flat bar under the wood and 2x1x14g for the loops.Does this seem like enough to support two people? To maintain the "floating" look, we'd like to use the smallest thickness for the support.
Reply:Grain patterns on the benches shown in the link tell me it's not a solid piece of wood, but a built up box. It's especially noticeable in the "blonde" seat, but if you look close the grain patterns don't match exactly even in this pict. The end grain on the benches gives it away.My 1st thought would be to simply skip the bar underneath and weld in a few threaded nuts in the legs and bolt the wooden box to the legs for the strongest joint. A small washer or spacer between the seat and the legs would still give you that "floating" look by keeping the seat off the legs. I doubt anyone would ever see the spacer unless they looked close at it.If you wanted to simply use a solid wooden bench seat, I'd rout the underside of the seat so that the support bar is recessed. This would allow you to use a heavier piece of material for the bar and you could drill counter sinks in that to hide the fasteners. I might even go so far as to rout out the middle of the support bar to hold a piece of steel like an inverted T. This would give you more lateral support if the bench gets loaded sideways..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:IMO I'd use square tubing under the wood if I didn't bolt the wood to the frame as suggested above.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:I built this exact same bench, doing it the way i thought was the best way to go. I used 2" square all around.......And 2X3's glued together and planed down........ Here are some pics of how I did it. Hopefully it will help you...... Attached ImagesPrecision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Thanks all.Fexal, that is great. Is the wood just sitting on top or do you bolt it in?I was thinking of routing some groves into the wood and just sitting it over the supports.
Reply:I was going to do the routing thing too, but after hand planing the wood I opted to just screw it in from the bottom with 2" screws. It's very sturdy either way and weighs enough that it doesn't skip around on the tile at all.Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook......
