I recently picked up a part time job at a hot rod shop where they mostly do mig welding. I hardly get to do mig at my full time job since all we have is Tig welders...But anyways here is a few pic on some bolt in rear c-notches. O, and its all contentious welding no pulse.Strive For Perfection

Reply:Damn, looks like a machine weld.  I don't seem to be capable of making a long weld with out a hiccup or two.
Reply:I use my pinkie finger to support my hand as  i go..Strive For Perfection
Reply:I always knew that little finger was good for something! That is one steady hand you have there Brooks.
Reply:Thanks guys for the comment!...Strive For Perfection
Reply:Great beads!
Reply:I can see why you wouldn't have any trouble picking up a 2nd job in todays tough times. Those are some very nice looking welds.Hillbilly Fabworks
Reply:i agree, good beads...Charlton
Reply:Beauty! what were your settings? type of gas and wire and size of wire? how thick was the material? Type of machine too?Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:I have a new hero. Do you work for beer?  Just kidding,  I have this strange compulsion to do all my own welding and take credit for every good bead. The bad ones mysteriously get ground out and redone when nobody is looking. Then I can take credit for them too.
Reply:Dang, I got a looooong way to go.

Reply:Mate, well done. What technique are you using when you are welding those C Notches? You must have one of the steadiest hands in the world to get them like that..even the TIG welding is a master peice! Please do show us more, its a insperation to say the least. Is that your truck in your picture? are you able to post up some pictures of your hand work on that and other automotive master peices you have worked on?
Reply:Its my brothers truck here is the thread on it http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=26353 , he has 2 66 c-10s. the technique used in the mig is build up a puddle go forward quickly in a nice movement not to slow or fast then bring the puddle back to the first one let it build up for a second and repeat....I have my buddy Nate that owns the shop to thank for showing me how by watching him and in trade i showed him my tig technique.. it something that you have to learn in person to get a better understanding...Strive For Perfection
Reply:Nice, so you are creating little puddles that are linked together rather than one constant weld??? If you know what I mean. Nice truck, looks good.
Reply:yea, its still constant but with a pattern in it....Strive For Perfection
Reply:I would refer to that as whipping.  I think it's more of a stick term, but seems to me that if fits here too.The classic "stack of dimes" weld .........that's about as textbook as you can get for perfect welds.  Awesome work.
Reply:I'd tell you that stuff looks great but I bet you've already heard that.
Reply:Beautiful.  Please share more in the future!

Reply:I have done very little MIG but am keen to try out this method now! I can lay down a pretty good TIG weld but want to learn more on the MIG side. Good work that man!

Reply:That's about as good a mig weld as I've seen in awhile. Wish we could find some more people who can weld like that out here. Are you pulsing that tig welded outside corner? Looking at it I'm either confused, missing something or i'm going blind. The ripples look more "square" like a really widely spaced cover pass made by walking the cup but without the overlap of the ripples right down the center. My only other theory is that you're influencing the puddle with a quick side to side motion, dabbing and then moving forward. But I can't believe you could do that and move fast enough to keep the HAZ that tight. So I'm left with the pulse theory. Stupid high peak amps over an ultra short period with a longer period with just enough amps to maintain the arc? This is going to drive me nuts. I just held my laptop right up to my face so I could be sure there wasn't an overlap down the middle. Sick sick consistency btw. I'm impressed.

Reply:WOW Great Looking Work!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Hmm, I bet that technique would help me quite a bit. I have a Miller 180 with Auto Set, which I've been using, and using straight drag. This seems to force me to move too fast for my liking. But using that method might allow me to progress more slowly and get a better looking bead. Thanks for showing that.
Reply:Beautiful welds.2 quick questions. Can you tell me if you're using a push or pull technique? Do you think someone can get such clear bead definition like yours with metal as thin as 16 or 18 gauge?
