Can a old miller 35 weld 1/4 steel. I found a old miller 35 for 300 bucks . my buddy is looking.for a MIG that he can use to weld.1/4 and 3/16 plates to car frames. will this welder work for.him.
Reply:1/4" steel is doable with that machine. It's rated at 150 amps 60% duty cycle and looks to top out at around 200 amps. By comparison the MM211 is rated at 150 amp 20% duty cycle on 230v and tops out just a bit higher on max amps. It's probably closer in specs to the MM212 that's rated at 160 amps @ 60% duty cycle and tops out at 210 amps... $300 for a 230v 180-200 amp class mig is certainly a decent deal, even if it is an old plug style machine. It's certainly a better machine than anything you can pick up at HF by far.Link to the manual...http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o1301q_mil.pdfMy only real concern would be him welding on vehicle frames. There a lot more to it than simply having a machine with enough amps. My guess is if he doesn't know enough about migs to pick his own, he probably lacks the skills needed to do even basic welds out of position. Factor in things like the fact that newer vehicle frames need specialized weld procedures, ( most newer high tensile frames specifically state they are NOT to be welded for very good reasons) and it seriously makes me doubt this is something he should be getting involved with at this point..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've ran many rolls of wire through a Millermatic 35. Yes it will weld 1/4" plate no problem. For $300.00 if it works good I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. Its a very tough transformer machine that welds excellent.
Reply:Dsw the frame work is not on new cars It's on old g body frames . He does hydraulic on lowriders and he asked ne to keep and eye on a MIG since i am always on Craigslist.
