Suppose your spaceboat has had its main viewport window destroyed by blaster fire, and further suppose that you were in a real hurry to jury-rig a replacement for it.  Transparent aluminum wouldn't be readily available.  So, what kind of material would you weld over the viewport to seal the breach, and, more importantly, what type of equipment would you use to make the repair?

Reply:Hmmm.  This looks very promising.  Will it work in an oxygenless environment?  Sometimes when I'm out cruising in my spaceboat, I have to pop my enviro-suit on, exit the vessel and perform some quick repairs.  This happens, for example, after a narrow escape from a gunship battle.
Reply:Any other suggestions?

Reply:Some thick polycarbonate and RTV.  You can get away with only about 5psi cabin pressure if you're breathing pure oxygen.  No welding involved.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Remember to disconnect the ground cable from the flux capacitor or it may short out causing the warp coils to overload. Then the blaster damage would be nothing compared to the hole left in your spaceboat from that explosion. You might try interstellar strength duct tape for a quick fix.

Reply:Gas weld it with clothes hangers for the filler metal and old road signs or something for the patch, that'll last alittle while.

Reply:Is a spaceboat smaller than a spaceship? Kinda like a dingy? If so I would just trade it on a newer model, possibly something with a forceshield. That's how i used to treat my trucks, before the Depression.
Reply:It's definitely a spaceboat.  We were docked on a spaceship when the damage occurred.
Reply:was the damaged caused by the spaceship itself, or by someone attempting to cause damage to the space ship? If so, intergalactic law mandates that the owners of the space ship must repair any and all damages to your vessal. or be subject to warp sanctions and have their interstellare highway rights revoked. As for the repair itself, It's common practice to use a frame of hot glued popcicle sticks wrapped in Celephane to repair small holes form the inside, the cabin presure will hold the repair inplace. However for holes larger than your fist, you must ubtain a sheet of crystaline unubtainium .5 iin (interstellar inch) in width. it should be approximately 1.5 times larger than the hole to be repaired. Reduce cabin preasure to a vacuum and place the sheet over the hole. The vacuum will hold the sheet in place while you work. That's spendy stuff, you don't want it floating away on you. Once the sheet has been placed you need to use a double plasma sheilded molecular bonder to Genoweld the sheet to the hull plaiting. Make sure you leave at least 1 iin between the edge of the sheet and any access panels as the genoweld willnot be able to be removed once it's in place and you'll never be able to open the access panel. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Regarding the flux capacitor comments:  Do you guys think this is Back To The Future or something?!Oh how I wish that magic welding machine actually existed!  Now, just to let everyone know...  We did manage to get the spaceboat worthy again for interstellar travel. Albeit just once, however.  When we re-entered atmosphere on an alien moon in some godawful corner of the outer rim, the makeshift plate we affixed over the main viewport sprung a leak, and we quickly lost air pressure.  Thankfully we were low enough in our re-entry descent that we could breathe the thin air that was available.  We got lucky in that the moon we decided to visit had enough levels of oxygen that we could indeed breathe the air.To let you know, we ended up using some polycarbonite sheeting which we shredded off of the nearby hangar wall on the spaceship.  (To tell you the truth, it was more of a luxury space cruise vessel.)  I used a handheld plasma torch to cut the approximate shape and then welded the piece over the opening on the viewport.  It held long enough even to get us into hyperspace. We arrived safely, so I guess it worked, and now I'll have more time to do a proper repair.  But I like to learn from my mistakes.I appreciated the suggestion of dropping the pressure inside the spaceboat.  Great idea!  Unfortunately, because of the gaping hole in the viewport, this wasn't possible.  If I had more time, maybe I could have just used some industrial strength plastic wrap to get a seal first. We thought of using a light saber to try the repair, but concluded that it would probably be more damaging than helpful. On that note, has anyone every successfully repaired anything using a light saber?!  A rather inelegant device for this kind of work, but I'm thinking it might be possible.
Reply:I'd say do it once and do it right, just increase the shield enough to contain the atmosphere until you can get the right transparent aluminum, why half *** the repair and then have to do it over?miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:A light saber is a cutting implement, not a welding implement. It will however make clean cuts through thick metal, even in the vacuum or space. It's good for cleaning up a damaged area for repair. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Mike, Han Solo was not a Jedi. you need to return the Solo starter kick and order the skywalker starter kit. Moon,The issue with what you're suggesting is you're not melting the base materials to creat the bond. The plasma blade of the saber is designed to limit the distance heat emits from it, otherwise it would burn the user. In addition, the metal that contacts the blade doesn't so much melt as it burns away. Think of it like a saw cutting wood. The material is removed and nothing goes in it's place on the back side.Zap,Foil hats are for rookies. People who know what's up know that you need to be in a lead lined bunker burried a minmum of 15' sub surface in order for the government satilites not to be able to fry your brain. And for surface ventures a krytonium brain solidifier is the only protection possible. New models of these solidifiers have been successfully modified to look like a normal ball cap, Cowboy hat, or hard hat. so you never know who's protected and who isn't.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
