I'm curious what good panels and gates are selling for in your region? I've been wondering if there is any money to be made building some of these in my spare time. I see CL ads looking to buy good heavy-duty panels all the time. And I think people want something better than average Tractor Supply panels. These would be 5x10" 5x12" panels etc. All made out of heavy tubing. Any Ideas on what they are going for?-1948 Short Hood SA-200-Millermatic 251-Hypertherm PM45-Victor Torches/Regs
Reply:Careful on the "heavy" part, remember who has to set 'em.  Not all farmers are created equal I went to an auction on Sunday, and it seems like panels sold for $70 to $90 each.  Of course they were in lots, mixed good and bad.  But feeder panels caught the most attention. There weren't too many gates, seems like they went for $200ish if I remember right. This was at the Woodburn farm equipment and machinery auction in Woodburn OR.Hog/sheep feeders brought more than I thought they would.  So did harrows, but they look like a PIA to build.Hay escalators sold pretty good too.I know this is all region specific, but hopefully it helps.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Thank you for the info dubl_t. And I know what you mean on being too heavy, but I think there is a need for "stouter" built panels in my area than what can be bought at all the big box farm stores. It's just a crazy thought but thought I would ask around on prices. Never know...Thanks again-1948 Short Hood SA-200-Millermatic 251-Hypertherm PM45-Victor Torches/Regs
Reply:The gates shouldn't be that heavy anyway, my bulls will break the wire first anyway. Unless you're talking about chaining the gate to their necks, then by all means make them heavy.
Reply:yea, I think that'd be a tough market to break in to.  the box store panels are light/weak, but the price is right.  I couldn't make 'em for what they get for 'em here.  Maybe cattle guards, custom loading chutes, and hell, everybody knows the money's in horses; buy and rebuild horse trailers.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....

Reply:I don't know what is like down there but up here we have Mennonites/ Amish making the gates & panels. They make for the farm supply stores & we just can't compete. The beef guys in our area make their own. I hate those gates! They are way too heavy. One of the truckers for the one farmer had a gate fall on his leg. Several surgeries later and 1 to1-1/2 yrs later,  he won't even be able to go back in the cattle yard-just drive truck. If you can find material cheap enough(2nds) you might be able to make a little extra cash. I wish you the best!
