Is this the proper way to combine a vehicle frame??
Reply:Looks good so far zakt but if you haven't already you'll want to grind those welds smooth and weld on some fishplates over the joints.  I didn't search for it but there is a really good thread here that covers the do's and don'ts of this type job.Was the original front clip damaged?  Or the rear? Or a 4X2 to 4X4 conversion?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Well I don't know if this has anything to do with it but something happens every night at 10:30 (my time) and it just got through doing it's thing a few minutes ago.  If you attempt to post or navigate on the site it stops (like it's thinking) for a couple minutes and then everything goes back to normal.  The same thing happens EVERY night at 10:30.WEEEEOOOOO!!!!Are the two pics in the OP or another one 'cause I see the two in the OP but nothing else.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:OK.  Here's a thread http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ht=crossmember covering a HD truck frame stretch.  Even though your frame isn't heat treated as a HD frame is with its concerns, the principles are the same.  I'll look for the other one I was thinking about an post that link too.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:zakt; The front horns on the frame between the 4x4 and the 2x4 are different and if you use a leaf spring type axle their won't be enough room for the hangers in the front. BUT with a torch and welder anything is possible[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]weekend metal melter and all around pain
Reply:quote=zakt;232613]Is this the proper way to combine a vehicle frame??  [/quote]short answer no in doing the join like that you have made at least 2 stress points were it will crack as shown in this pic the way I do them is 45 the top and bottom flange and the web of the chassislike in this pic  weld then put a inner chassis rail at least 1 ft pass the join either side so you would end up with a 2ft inner rail over the join then bolt it in place Last edited by wello; 12-06-2008 at 04:39 AM.Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:When I did frame work like that I did the same as wello. Also added a diamond shaped plate to the outside of the frame.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed. That is fine but not necessary. A regular straight cut works just as well. Put the diamond shaped fishplate on it and be sure to round off all the corners. I have done several 2 1/2 ton winch trucks with the plain ol' straight cut butt weld and seen a lot more, some even larger trucks, done this way and have never seen a failure. If they will stand up in the oilfield done this way they will stand up anywhere.
Reply:This type of frame cut will work really well. It makes it easy to assemble esp. if your measurements and cuts are right on. If you are worried about the stress points wello pointed at don't weld at the corners leave a small area open (no more than the thickness of the frame) this would be just like drilling a hole at the end of a crack before welding it.
Reply:My mig welder will work for this also Im thinking, then just bevel the joint area to get good penatration?Todd
Reply:zakt, depends on the mig welder...  you would have to make an awful lot of passes using a 120v mig.  I'm not saying it isn't capable, but make sure you take care if using a 120v mig.  Take careDanwww.hillisfabrication.com

Reply:You're good to go then!I just have to say it as my neighbor always brings stuff to me after it breaks from using his 135amp mig.  He tries to compare it to a powermig 350mp just because they are both wire feed. Take care,Danwww.hillisfabrication.com
Reply:does it matter where I should make the cut, is one place better than another.  I know I just have to make it past the leaf springs but could go farther back to a certain point.  I have a crewcab 72 I will have to use a single cab as the crews are tuff to find (frame pic attached below)

Reply:Yup... Wello beat me to it.He outlined the same procedure I use when altering frames on Class 8 trucks.  Weld the frame out, then BOLT on another frame rail on the inside that goes past the welding by at least 1 foot either side. The frame mod that your friend did is coutesy of those two clueless hacks Kevin and Ryan off of "Trucks" on Spike's Power Block.I watched that episode, and the re-airs, and I just cannot believe how crappy Ryan's welds are... Cold, Cold, Cold.  No wonder they use a long shot from the camera to pan over them quickly, and then are not long masking the garbage with paint.Just another example of poor welding procedures learned on the poorest source for welding information.... Reply:saw that episode also, thats why I was wondering  4 grade 8 1/2 bolts work on each side of the weld or would 7/16 work?
Reply:Not much of a difference in the price of the two (or the size for that matter) but I would go with the 1/2" bolts... "Just Because" I guess.Later,Jason

Reply:zakt you weld both side of the rail mig welding it is fine I'll agree to disagree good luck with your truck Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:I won't comment on the cut, not my fort. I will say preheat, preheat, preheat. Once you are all tacked together and plan which sequence of welds you like, preheat evenly over the widest area possible, all around the joint. Thickness it hasn't got, but overall size has a similar effect in conducting the heat away too quickly if you just start cold. It might help you avoid warping as well. City of L.A. Reply:I always preferred two diamond points in the frame rail.   =======>========No stress risers maximum support to the welded areas.    I have done some like this with a liner and several that I didn't use a liner.   Just welds only.    Some I did A full frame liner from the front engine mount back.I used to be able to explain the technical engineering reasons on why this was a far superior way to do the splice but my 3/4's of an engineering deg is leaving me right now.For just a pickup I would do the diamonds then I would add a elongated diamond fishplate for good measureI Did a couple of truck frames that were going to be boom trucks and required insane RBM's near 7 million these ended up being FULL double frames with a front engine mount back third liner.    So far so good see them running around the area every now and again.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
