Reply:Got some more done today. A few more pieces of tube and time to weld up all the joints then start skinning. 20 gauge sheet for the top and front. 1/2" x 6" hat channel for the sides. How about this skin. I don't think it'll travel well. The tent and tarps keep the wind at bay so I can mig outside, and it keeps the nosey folks away pretty well, too. It is often quite a challenge to balance being nice with the need to run folks off so I can get something done. All the roof framing is tacked in. I need to add about 6 pieces to the front to finish it before welding and skinning.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:[QUOTE It is often quite a challenge to balance being nice with the need to run folks off so I can get something done.Brian, you should be glad I'm not closer than I am.  You would be running me off everyday.I still love your work, and congrats on the new one on the way.Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210
Reply:Working in the "shop space expansion pack", which includes: One pop up tent, several tarps a welding blanket, a welding screen, a few pieces of scrap steel, 1/2 a dozen bungee cords, and, that universal ghetto repair/construction material, duct tape, had me singing this song all day long. (In my head so I don't piss off the neighboors ). The very first line is the hook, "Well have you ever lived down in the ghetto...". I may have never lived there but I've been working there lately.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:Brian,   As usual, I'm impressed with your work.  Would you explain to a newbie just how you tacked the sheetmetal to the frame.  I'm not asking about the moulding of it to the spars, just the tacking.  I'm wondering if I can tack metal roofing to a square tubing frame for a shed I'm building.  Thanks....Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210

Reply:Be aware though, that welds are not necessarily better than screws or rivets, which cant take the flexing better with less chance of failure.
Reply:Thanks  for the tips, Brian.     I will get started on it soon.  Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210

Reply:Thanks Mr McC.Making some good progress in the horse trailer last few days.Tack room and escape doors are on, next a couple of knee braces then start to sheet the sides. Here's where I started this AM. Roof and front sheeting all done.Tack room and escape door ready to hang. Notches are for paddle style handle/latch assemblies. Tack room doorEscape door.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:A few more shots.Escape door will open flat against side of trailer.Door handle details. The flat bar surrounding handle is for cutting the hat channel out of the way enough to leave plenty of room to grab the door handle.Inside of door handle.Front view with both doors open.Alright lunch break's over, back to work. Looks like I can't ease up yet, sold 3 more jobs this week, plus 2 that sold last week. I'm really diggin' on having all this work lined up. Keep it coming.Last edited by app-ironworksllc; 06-11-2010 at 01:54 PM.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Doors-check.knee braces-check.I think it looks like a decent bead. 2" x 1" x 16 g A-36 rectangle tube, Powcon 300SM on GMAW short arc @17.8V, ER70-S6 wire @ 168.8 IPM w/C25 unimix @ 30CFH, running downhill.Time to prep the 6" x 1" hat channel and start skinning the sides. It'll go on sort of like siding with a little overlap at the flanges.Last edited by app-ironworksllc; 06-11-2010 at 03:15 PM.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:Nice build!  I like the innovation of using a existing flat bed and making it work!  I would give you my opinion of coating everything inside with the cheap rhino lining roll on bed protectant so that you can wash it out after you are done hauling animals.  Makes the cleanup so much easier and extends the life of the trailer.
Reply:Thanks, Pontiac Freak,That sounds like a great idea, but my part is done for now. Phase 1 is what you see finished here, then the owner takes it home to r&r the floor, axles, and do some layout planning. Then it will come back to me for a tack room divider wall, mount the fenders (and maybe running boards) and whatever odds and ends they want. After that they take it home and paint it themselves. I've painted a horse trailer before, I wouldn't do it again for anything less than 2 grand. It was actually a livestock trailer originally, not a flat bed. Before:After:Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:Nice build. What gauge is the hat channel?Did you or the owner decide they'd retro the floor?  One of the worse things in the world I seen was where a horse fell through and nobody knew till they stopped.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
