What do you guys think the psi rating is on a 15 gallon stainless beer keg? I have 4 of the laying around, and would like to try to use them as tanks for a air compressor. Bad idea? The psi for the compressor I have is 145.Millermatic 211PowerPlasma 50s
Reply:I have no idea what a keg is rated for as far as pressure. I will pass on the link to what happened to one of our members who had a compressor tank fail on him personally. He's very lucky to have survived with the "minimal" injuries he got. The actual reason the tank failed really don't matter, it's the end results you need to look at and think about. You decide if it's worth the risk to you.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=48232.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I mess with 15 gallon beer kegs all the time, and in my opinion its not a good idea.  If that keg explodes, game over.  To carb beer, I only put 35 psi on the keg which its meant for.

Not that I agree with this approach but that is the way it is.I am sure that some of the responses that new members receive do turn them off. But they need do some research before they post some really dumb questions, and questions that have been asked 100 times.225 had made a couple posts that he got good replies on and then he gets one that he finds offensive and he packs his bags and leaves.Miller Diversion 180Lincoln Mig Pak 5000 HDHypertherm 45Uni-Spotter Stud WelderOxy Set-up with Harris TorchMiller 30FX Arc StationMiller Elite - Hockey Canada Helmet
Reply:LOL!Stick the ugly store bought air compressor outside so you don't have to look at it and build yourself a cool oil catch with the beer kegs. You say you have a few, you could have one for oil, one for antifreeze, and make one a urinal. You could take them all in and collect the deposits and use that money to buy an air compressor.

Reply:@225, Wow got ur feelings hurt awful easy. Now put ur bigboy pants on and take heed of the warning that has been given: DONT MODIFIY UR BEERKEGS FOR COMPESSED AIR, YOU'll PUT UR EYE OUT KID.lol, seriously thoughAfter that grow some thicker skin, welding safety is a grown up's world. I'd much rather see somebody get their feelings hurt as opposed to getting physically hurt, being injured is not fun and can have permanent effects on everyone in your life.Every safety rule they're is, IS WRITTEN IN BLOOD. Is that clear enough for you. This forum isn't all that bad compared to some.Hope you don't drag up over this.I've seen kegs that have a max pressure rating stamped into them.  I *think* last one I saw was 65 psi, but I wouldn't be pumping one up to 65 psi without checking.  In any case a 65 psi limit is going to make it pretty useless for a portable air tank.Fuel tanks, grills, deep fryers, boilers, and BEER!  Find another use for your keg.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:He has 3 forums, wonder how many members on those if you play by his rules, must be a lonely site.   As far as beer kegs go I have found 2 uses, A duh, BEER, and then cut them open as they make and excellent stainless steel pot for the turkey fryer.Would not want to buy and pay for a pot this size.If you cut them at the rib where it flares out and cut again at the narrow part you can actually make a pot with a lid that sits right in the lip , maybe get picture later if you are good.LOL"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Just set your machine on the keg welding setting. It's the little button on the back near the power cord. After passing the button, you gotta spin arround in a circle, hop on one foot, and do the hokey pokey. Follow that with the robot, and then crank the voltage all the way up, the amps all the way down, and run on ACEN.(alternating current electrode neutral) And your good to go. What machine you have does not mater I prefer an O/A set up, but really a TIG, mig, or stick will work too.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.

Reply:On the serious side, my neighbor had a pressurized sand blaster blow it was crazy bad. He had a clogged valve and decided he would crank the pressure and blow the clog out. Needless to say the pressure built to the point ~150 psi and the screw on top blew off. It went straight through the 3/4" plywood sub floor and 3/4" red oak floor and stuck into his kitchen ceiling from his basement. Large volume high pressure is a bad combo!

Reply:The urinal was actually a good idea if you plumb it to drain in the leach field. Plumb it with a garden hose. It could become unsanitary though. I was thinking of making a shop stool or bar stool out of one.
