we have a cast iron wheel on a peice of equipment that rools on concrete.it wears out reall quick to try to make it last longer we welded the edge with a nickel rod an was wondeing if you could build up the edge with a steel rod now.  cast iron-nickel -steel will that work an if yes what rod should i use

Reply:The problem with cast is the high carbon and its proneness to stress cracking as the weld cools. If you arent having cracking problems you could always try it and see if it works, You may want to look into hard facing rods for use on cast iron. That would provide a very durable wear surface for what your looking to do. Google may be your friend here, I would look into nickel based wear material.
Reply:I would look into hardfacing rods for welding onto cast iron. When done correctly, with the right type of hardfacing rod for the base metal and type of wear involved, hardfacing can give a huge reduction in wear. I'm sure the rods are expensive (compared to common steel ones), but factor in downtime and all the work involved in maintainance it probably ends up being cheaper anyway.
Reply:I use this company's products a lot. Great on the phone. The stuff is pricey but it does the job. Here's a link to their tech data on the products:http://www.crownalloys.com/technical.phpEricAWS D1.1 Certified SMAW 3G Unlimited, Open Root                             FCAW-G 3G Unlimited, w/BackerCellular Tower Reinforcement Welding on the frozen tundra of the greater Mid-West
Reply:More info would help. If the wheel is solid, and made of grey or ductile iron, many hardfacing products will work. If it's cast for abrasion resistance or high heat + abrasion like Ni-hard cast iron it's tougher to do safely. You can also talk to your LWS and say you want the wear properties if Ni-hard or Ni-resist they should be able to help you out (might take a phone call or two).Matt
Reply:You might also want to take another look at the situation....if you hard face the wheels will you end up creating ruts in the concrete?  Is there a better choice that will reduce the abrasion between the wheel and the rolling surface? For example, if the equipment rolls on the same route all the time would it make sense to install steel tracks for it to roll on?Another question is...why are the wheels abrading so quickly?  Are the bearing surfaces fouled somehow, are there failed or missing bearings?  Are grease fittings being neglected or maybe there are no grease fittings?Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:its a wheel for a curb edging machine an rools on the concrete cartpaths it shoul have been made out of something other than grey cast iron. we hard faced the edge with a nickel alloy an was wounderin if someother type of rod could be used to build up on top of the nickel welds
