I was cutting a 1" pipe with oxy/ac torches. I was trying to cut at the edge and roll it, but I got too close to the middle and BAM it blew molten metal right into my eyeball. It hurts pretty bad, I rinsed it out but the wife is trying to get me to go to the hospital. I really hate the emergency room and I'm looking for some advice OTHER THAN use your goggles moron. I can still see out of it right now. My eye feels just like skin does when it's burnt. It's all bloodshot.Again, I know it was stupid, so that's not what I'm looking for. I'm wondering if it has happened to anyone else and what was the outcome. And also any remedies.
Reply:Don't be stoopid, go to the hospital!!
Reply:Thanks for putting that in big bold letters so I could see it better. I'm going to go finish my project and see how it feels after that.

Reply:I 5th what everyone else is saying. I got a piece of aluminum flake in my eye once and that was bad enough I had to dig it out. Molten metal is no good for the eyeball go to the hospital or eye doctor

Reply:I may have been being a little dramatic because it feels fine now. Just a little irritation. I have gotten crap in my eyes a lot, and this doesn't feel as bad as it usually does. I still may go to the Dr. if it starts feeling worse or if it doesn't seem to be getting even better. Thanks for all the concern guys.
Reply:If you can get on here, and type, you still can see.The slag might have cooled off a bit before it hit your eye, or the liquid in the eye may have cooled it off even more.I'm gonna get hammered for this, but why the question??If a truck drove over yer foot, you'd be headed to the ER.  So what's the question about the  eye"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Having it feel better is not always a good sign. You wont feel a piece embedded in your eye. You may feel the scorched area on the outside of your eye but that goes away fairly soon. The piece inside your eye does not. However, it WILL rust fairly quickly and then you have a real problem.Have your wife sit down with you and check out some sites on the web...Pick some nice purty colors and have her decide what she wants to fill that hole in your face where your eye used to be...
Reply:Seriously, go to the eye doc ASAP!  An emergency room is fine, but an ophthalmologist in an office would probably be more convenient and cost you less in the end.I've had a shaving of metal in my eye, and yes, you may think you can deal with the pain, BUT, unless its removed right away, it will rust, and that will leave a permanent rust ring in your cornea.  You DON'T want that in your field of vision. Not to mention the serious likelihood of infection when something foreign and porous gets in your eye (which is especially a problem with aluminum shavings, but rusty steel and slag aren't much better). There's just no way you'll be sure its gone without an eye doctor looking through special binoculars with specialized lighting.
Reply:after spend a month in the hospital this summer I really didn't want to see a hospital again. But I had to go last night for 6 stiches. Even if you got the piece of metal or slag out they will have some antibiotic ointment for you to put in the eye. I've had stuff in my eye before and sometime they can even get it out with a magnet but if you let it get too deep that easy trick is no good. Let your wife drive. When it comes to an eye if you took the time to post this it's bad enough to go.  Try an urgent care clinic , if you have one in your area, if you don't won't to go to the hospital. If it is as minor as you think they can handle that.Last edited by tresi; 01-08-2009 at 12:48 AM.Tough as nails and damn near as smart

Reply:have you ever had your eye drilled? I had a peice in my eye for a long time, and it healed with it inside, getting it taken out sucks a$$. further more if you leave metal in your eye and (this goes for everyone on here) you ever have to have a m.r.i. make sure to get your head xrayed, metal left in your eye can move from the magnet and F things up, be smart get it checked even if it feels better. I had to have a mri about a year ago and they x rayed my head three times to ensure there was no more metal left in my eye, I knew I was getting an mri, just imagine you get in a wreck or some $hit and your knocked out and they throw you in that magnet and you come out effin blind
Reply:When a person goes in for an MRI, he is asked whether he has ever worked at a machine shop. The reason is that, under the strong magnetic forces, even tiny bits of metal will 'migrate' as if they are small bullets, piercing vital organs. It has been found that shop workers over a lifetime often can have small particles embedded under the skin. Something in the eye would be terrible under those circumstances, if not for those already listed. A quick exam is good, cheap insurance compared to the alternative.A few months ago, I was using my 4 1/2" grinder outside and wearing good safety glasses, but somehow a small spec got blown into my eye. I tried raising the lid and  rinsing it out, then rested it all night, but decided something was still there the next morning. I got an appointment with an eye doctor that afternoon; he was surprised when he found the small speck right where I said it would be, and he carefully removed it with Q-tip like swab. I had him give it to me and I checked it when I got home; under a strong magnifying glass, it looked like a long spiral chip cut by a sharp lathe tool. Being stainless, it had left no rust on the eyeball. eyeball engineer   is absolutely correct! Reply:Hey Sparky, any metal in your eye is resting in a saline solution, your tears, you know that salty taste? Salt turns metal (steel) rusty. Rust causes infection. Within the span of one day, a ring of rust will have formed around the metal object. By tomorrow morning if you don't feel 100% perfect (and even if you do), my advice is to go to your Doctor or Urgent Care or E.R. if need be. Infections in the eye are NO JOKE. Getting that object out is IMPORTANT, but removing the rust ring is JUST AS IMPORTANT. Yes, it sucks having the rust ring removed, but not as much as leaving it in to FESTER! I was even wearing glasses when I got hit by a riccoche.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Even if you scratch your cornea, forget a deeper burn or gouge, you really need to be on some antibiotic drops. You are susceptible to an infection that may cost you your sight. No matter if you have insurance or not, go to the ER or see an ophthalmologist.  Good luck.
Reply:Always wear safety glasses when welding or cutting - even with a helmet.Once I was welding with no safety glasses.  A spark went inside my helmet and hit the exact center of my eyeball.  The good Lord was taking care of me.  I had my contacts in, and the spark hit right on the contact lens. It got very hot and I could tell for sure what happened.  It seemed to want to stick to my eye a bit, but I removed it, and my eye was fine. No burn or scar.  I was very very lucky, and never welded without safety glasses again.
Reply:I had a similar situation, but could see the little spec in/on the white of my eye.  I waited two days because it didnt hurt thinking it wouldnt be a big deal and would work its way out.  It started to RUST in my eye.  I woke up in the morning and my eye was red, swollen, and watery.  The eye doctor explained to me (this is now Sunday so I got to pay extra) that rust is necrotic (kills tissue) and instead of a quick pick to get it out he now had to take this high speed brush and grind/brush out all the rust.  Long story short........ GO TO THE DOCTOR!

Reply:A guy I worked with got a piece in his eye. He waited two days and by then he could not even open his eye. The eye doctor DUG it out, treated the infection and charged him almost $500.Two weeks later he did it again and went right away. Same Dr took it out and charged him $50.He got both pieces in his eye while cutting with OA and had safety glasses on. If you did not have them on, the metal was most likely hotter when it got to your eye. It may have stopped hurting because it is numb.As for the MRI, I was told that metal in your body, like a metal chip under the skin, will scar over and the MRI will not pull it out but your eye does not scar so it will allow the metal to be pulled out or moved. Not something to play with.Let us know what you end up doing.

Reply:Most surgeries and replacements use stainless and or titanium.  My wife had a total knee replacement and can undergo an MRI. I on the other hand (no pun intended ) have a piece of ( ferris metal) drill bit in my hand which disqualifies me.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:Mondo, just curious; what good stuff did you find in the dumpster?  BTW, it's not a good idea to jump in without looking, especially in the dark. Someone might have discarded a huge piece of broken window glass, some sharp -edged sheet metal, a pile of thorny rose clippings.....Hopefully, Sparky has gotten the message by now. If not, here's just one more:Twice I've had rust scraped of my eyeball. First time, I slid under my truck for a quick look at something and some 'dirt' fell in my eye. Second time, I was riding a bicycle down a road and something blew in.Both times, I got to my eye doctor within 12 hours but rust had already started to form. My doc said it was times like that that patients really appreciated him (as he scraped away...)Regarding MRI's, the titanium and stainless parts implanted are not a problem; the small stuff steel that accidentally gets there is. I spoke to the technicians about that extensively a couple years ago when I took a relative to get a screening, and got some good horror stories from one of them. I think some of the info. was a printed report.Last edited by Oldiron2; 01-08-2009 at 09:53 PM.Reason: addition

Reply:This MRI thing is scary.  Never thought about it, and never was asked about it when I had an MRI last year. The crud in the eye.... Had that 2 times, and both times went in first thing in the morning.  The guy was able to get it out, then kind of buffed the area that he worked on.  It was a tiny rotary tool. Then he offered a prescription for pain killer.  Hell, it felt so damn good to get the sh outta my eye, I didn't need it.  Did get some antibiotic eyedrops.  The eyedrops worked good on styes also.  Get those damn things every Spring when I start working ground.  It must be the mold in the soil.  The dust carries a lot of bad stuff"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I was going to go to the eye doctor yesterday, but didn't have enough time. I will make an appt today. Yesterday morning I saw what looked to be a scab on my upper eyelid right where the eyelashes come out. Just below it and little to the left on my lower eyelid was a small hole that was burnt in. Later in the day I was looking at the scab and realized it wasn't a scab. It was slag that burnt into my eyelid. I took a magnet and tried to get it out. It didn't come out with the magnet part. There was a small plastic ridge on the magnet, so I held my eyelid out and scraped it with the ridge. It pulled it out and the magnet caught it. I think I may have closed my eye just in time and just got a blast of hot air, but will go to the doctor today anyway. One time I was drilling overhead on a job. I had to drill a ton of holes in a 1/8" metal plate so we could screw it to the floor joists to protect some wire runs. I had been drilling for about an hour when the GC came over and told me to get safety glasses. I told him I only had one more hole, but it didn't matter to him. I got safety glasses and drilled my last hole. A piece of metal went between my hard hat and glasses and hit my forehead, then bounced off the inside of my glasses and right into my eye. I got it out by rinsing and using a magnet. I went to the eye doctor a little while later on that one because it still killed. I had cut my cornea and he said it will scar. I don't know if it did or not because I have no obstruction in my view.I took pictures of the slag in my eyelid, but I didn't put them on here yet.

Reply:hi, hope all will be ok. Many years ago in school there was a safety poster that read , "you can walk with a wooden leg, { yea back then they used wood i guess] BUT you can't see with a glass eye'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I saw a OSHA safety film where they show the removal of those steel wire wheel brushes being DUG out of a guys eye !!! If that does remind you to always use safety glasses with side shields or wrap around type and face shield, I don't what would!!! get well , SEE YOU!

Reply:Been there and done that. I have a good friend that is an opti and when I get metal or anything in my eye i call him and he meets me at his office. He gave me some numbing eye drops to ease pain until i get there.I keep it handy in the frig. The eye drops are nothing to play with either. I am sure you will or have done the right thing. Reply:Hello Gents,Its been awhile since I've been on the board (work issues) but I'm back to the computer and back online.  I remember a similar post I did a year or so ago when I ground off a bracket and put a piece of red hot steel in my eye. Went to the ER and that doc missed the piece and claimed the eye was clear. I still made an appointment with my eye doctor (Opthalmologist) and he using his better tools discovered a small piece of rusting steel in my eye.  After 2 different procedure to grind out the rusty tissue the guy saved my eye.Its not cool or tough to hold off from going to the Doctor. God only gave you 2 eyes and you need both for depth perception which is important in welding and just about anything.  Go to the doctor, pay the fees, he/she just might save your eye and you will be thank full when you're tossing a ball back and forth with your grand kids someday.Millermatic 25115" Rockwell Drill Press10" Logan Lathe5hp - 2-stage 80 Gallon CompressorHome Made Sand / Soda Blaster
Reply:I used to be the same way.  I got a bit of grinding grit in my eye one day bounced under my safety glasses and hit my eye just right.    ended up emended in my eye lid.  HURT like hell!  I waited and waited and finally was like F this and went in.  well it was scabbed over and the eye doctor ended up having to flip my eyelid over and dig in my eyelids.   she said that if I had come in immediately that it would have been no big deal but the fact I waited made it a surgery.   Worst two hours of my life broken bones, burns, every other kind of injury wasn't close to that pain.  and the fact that if I would have went in earlier it would have been no big deal made it worse.  I have health insurance that covers everything and no worries for any medical care and I still hate going to the DR.  but I don't fark around with my eyes.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:i was grinding some carbon steel and got a sliver in my right eye one day. thought nothing of it.. didn't even know it was there. the next day, 4AM i roll out the door to go to work.. bit of a headache, car headlights feel like a punch in the temple tho. still, thought nothing of it. normal for a headache, right? light sensitivity and all... i get to work.. where theres 1000W HID lighting, and i damn near buckled from the pain. i immediately called the supervisor and told him i was going to the eye doctor and i won't be back in.. to the eye doctor i went.. took 3 days for them to scrape out metal and bits of rust it left behind.. went in hot, too. seared itself in there, i couldn't feel the metal in there, but i could CLEARLY see it in a mirror, and the immediate nerve damage from hot penetration caused it to not hurt in low-light conditions.. the minute i had to focus or otherwise engage the little lens in my eye, i turned into a little girl.don't F around with your eyesight bro. when it's gone, it's gone. i was lucky enough to retain the already poor vision i had anyway at least. nothing like the painful and literally blinding light they use to illuminate the debris in your eye when extracting the foreign crap. the light is so bright you instantly tear up in that eye.  they'll hold your eye opened and pluck out the metal with tweesers.. you can hear the tweezers slipping and grinding like it was in dolby surround sound set on 11. its bad enough to go thru when an accident does happen, but when metal sits in your eye for more than 3 hours, it starts to rust. thus generating an absolutely stellar couple of days ahead of you for debris removal and a few wonderful weeks of antibacterial eyedrops that cost $80. and excruciating headaches and such. super fun.Last edited by whitehendrix!; 01-16-2009 at 10:54 PM.http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
