First wanted to say Hi and that I am new to the forum and am hoping to get some help.  I have a Lincoln Ranger 8 that I just purchased with 300 hours on it and have been told two opposing answers to my question from others.  I have my main setting control that will read 90, 125, 175 v etc.  Then the fine control on top ranging from 1-10.  Some have told me that say if at 90 on the main and then 10 on the fine that would be 90 max and others say that would be 100.  Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but it has been 20 years since I last welded fully in High School and College.I am welding up some 6" gate pipe and have been running 6010P and got it running pretty well with adjusting the settings but just would like to know what the true nature of the settings are.  I know all machines vary on what settings work best.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much!  I have attached a picture of my model.  Thanks again Attached ImagesLast edited by 1freebird; 05-11-2012 at 12:11 PM.
Reply:The large switch sets the Maximum setting and the fine setting gets dialed in with the little dial. Recommended that you keep the dial between 5 and 10 as shown on the blue box "Anybody can talk $h!t behind a monitor, I let the quality of my work speak for itself"Lincoln Square Wave 255 and 355 Tig Lincoln 255 Power-Mig w/ spool gun Koike 5 x 10 CNC plasma Hyd-Mech DM-10 bandsaw Ineco QB-76 NC tube bender
Reply:with the needle at 125 and the fine at 10 it will make 125 amps. i think that with the fine at five, its like the bottom of the range the needle is at, in this case 90..
Reply:What Coupebuilder said.  Each coarse setting represents the maximum output with the 1-10 fine adjustment set to 10 or 100%.If you don't have a unit manual, go here http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...r-manuals.aspx and plug in the code# (upper left corner of face plate) to download the correct one which has the output curves to illustrates output ranges based on coarse and fine control settings.Run a few test beads at different fine control settings at a particular coarse setting to see just how the fine adjustment affects puddle and bead characteristics.Last edited by duaneb55; 05-11-2012 at 04:35 PM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Listen to Duane, it's important. The coarse settings (the range setting, hence the name Ranger) sometimes have overlap, mine has some serious overlap on some ranges, and it's there for a reason. So, what I'm saying is..........the fine setting isn't always 10% of the range as printed on the face of the machine due to the overlap."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Anyhow, you should just set it to where it welds good, and really forget about the dial"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Ok, I guess looking at it in % that makes more sense for the fine settings.  I was burning 1/8 inch 6010 5p+ and even at 90 main and around 5-10 on fine it seemed like I was having arc issues getting it going.  Once burning it seemed to run pretty well.  I always have liked the 6010 whip and pause because it seems like I can get better penetration and control of the puddle (and like the looks of it).  I will definitely go to Lincolns site and put in my code#  Thanks for all the good info.  I just did not know if at 90 and say 5 on the fine if I was running 95?  That did not add up?  So most all of you agree then if at say 125 main and 10 max for fine that would be considered just 125 Max?  Not exceeding 125 in theory then right?  I hope I am following correctly.  Thanks so much for the replies, I truly appreciate the help!
Reply:Yep.  You're following correctly.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks, found the manual online which is very helpful for oil, plugs and fuel-air filters etc...no specifics on the settings though for the fine adjustments just the following.  Control” SwitchProvides a fine welding current adjustment within theRange Switch settings in the STICK/TIG mode andwelding voltage control with the Range switch set inthe wire feed mode.So pretty much just as you all said before need to get it set by finding the main range and fine tune it from there to see what runs best.  Thanks for all the helpful posts I truly appreciate it!
Reply:yeah, the manual doesnt really say anything about the fine control..other than the note on the machine to set it betweem 5 and 10  you get to figure it out on yer own..
