Started out to make a front bumper for my White GT-205 Hydro lawn tractor, but during build found I had  a part of the frame assembly broke,it's part of the bracket that holds the front of the deck on.I'm sitting here contemplating whether to just try and weld the bolt tab back on or spend all day taking it apart, which is what needs to be done to do it right. The reason I'm doing this is because my dad borrowed it and run into something(says he did not run into anything) and cracked the front grill. So I'm going to build a bumper so this won't happen again.I don't want it looking like my friend's mower with no body on it at all because it had a front end collision with something. Reply:I wouldn't be too quick to judge against your dad on that crack! To me, that crack looks like a stress crack, and in the position that it is in, that is a high stress area, prone to cracking from the frame flexing on uneven ground. Those Whites didn't have very heavy frames to begin with, and if you or your dad or both have a lot of  ground that is uneven, you might want to check the rest of the frame out too, especially around where the rear transaxle bolts to the frame mounting tabs!Last edited by Ken Dennis; 07-11-2010 at 12:34 PM.#1. Reply:Take the bracket off and weld the little tab on properly.  Otherwise, to weld the tab on you'll end up welding the tab and the bracket onto the frame rail or whatever that vertical piece is.  And then when something else breaks or otherwise needs replacement, you'll have a welded assembly instead of a bolted assembly that could have been dissassembled.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Moonrise!I can't say for that model of tractor, but on most all of them, the frame is made of stamped steel, and that what you are calling a bracket or tab is actually part of the frame.Where the crack formed was right in front of the front cross member that the front axle is attached to, and also where the mowing deck and other front mount implements attach, that point at which the cross member meats the side frame rail is a heavy stress point, as the frame flexes and bends, and the front mower mount is also causing its own stress to that point, and especially if a front blade like a snow blade is also used on the tractor, it is common for the frame to develop cracks along that point on the frame, just as it is along the part of the frame where the  transaxle is mounted! In restoring old tractors, I have seen cracks like that one on many of them!#1.
