The more I read into this the more I''m getting confused. I always thought that since electrons flowed negative to positive that DC- got better penetration. I have since learned by some sources that DC+ gets better penetration BUT only if the electrode is DC+ only. If a rod is designed to be used with DC+ or - which setting would give the best penetration. I am strictly talking about arc welding rods. Thanks in advance!
Reply:It Depends.......It doesn't matter which way the electrons flow, at least not for me.  6013 is a good example.  It will work DCEN or DCEP.  I find it runs better and leaves a better bead on DCEN.  DCEP will go a little deeper, but that is not the answer. If you want more penetration, turn the heat up!  David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:For stick electrodes, penetration depends a lot on the coating. The subject of polarity came up a while ago wrt  TIG welding but got into stick arcs too; you might want to read:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=22308
