I bought my Miller Thunderbolt 225AC and the guy gave me a dozen 1/8"rods in a box.  I have tried a local welding supply shop and searched the web with no results.  The box says Industrial Alloys Company Div.  The welding shop had no cross reference for the company.  The only reason I care to figure this out is to get more of this mystery rod because it welds very smooth.   heres some picsThe end of the box is missing.  The remainder of the sticker reads:Industrial Alloys NO. 80 Low & Med alloy steel1/8" 90-120 amps70,000 psi tensile strengthuses: heat controlled electrode used on low & med carbon steels. Ideal for resurfacing worn or over machined parts. excellent general purpose electrodedirections: flux is moisture resistant. electrode can be bent, and flux will stay on wire.  For out of position welding. deposits are spatter free and slag is easily removed.Industrial Alloys co.,Chicago, Illinois 60626Any info is helpful, ThanksThe more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:Are there any markings on the rods themselves? It's a 70 series rod, maybe 7014 but the amp #'s don't match my list for that rod however.
Reply:the rods have no markings at all.  no numbers or stripes. unfortunately.  The welding shop guy was making the same comment about the amperage.  the flux is just slightly darker than the fresh Lincoln 6013 I picked up today to use till I get this figured out.The more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:probably 7014.  it's in the F2 group with 6013 which may be why they look similar.
Reply:Flux color means nothing. Take one to a grinder and compare sparks with different other electrodes. I had a guy bring me one of these mystery rods the other day and it wound up being a stainless steel electrode. The guy he got it from said it was a souped up 6013.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:Is there any more of the company name under the label? The   name showing implies that I.A. is a division of something larger. Nothing comes up on the web for me under I.A.c.You might send this question to Lincoln or another of the larger companies, 'cause someone there probably keeps track of everything which goes/has gone on in the industry.Last edited by Oldiron2; 02-17-2009 at 12:26 AM.
Reply:should I be able to see a difference between sparks from a 6013 and 7014(if that were what this is) or are they too close in composition for a notable difference? my mystery rod is attracted to a magnet, maybe more-so than the 6013.  So I dont think its stainless.  Thanks for the input,  Ill grind on them tomorrow. The more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:You wont notice much difference if ANY in the sparks a 6013 vs. a 7014 would make. I have seen some hardfacing rods without numbers before. I figured you could see the difference between those sparks and that of a steel electrode. Burn one and check em out!only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld

Reply:you could tell more by the way the slag looks. Run em side by side and before you chip them look at the slag. Slag looks different too.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:from the foto on the box i would think they were very short.....
Reply:Dorsey-reynolds Internationale Inc Industrial Alloys Co DivBeecher,il,60401United Statesmaybe?
Reply:sounds like a 7014, I would have said farmerrod 7024 but it mentions out of position welding.
Reply:I ground the bare ends of both rods today on the grinder and could not tell any difference in the sparks.  I even had a coworker verify.  didnt get a chance to run any beads yet though. The more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:Finally ran two beads.  Here it is.  The 6013 is on the top or on the right. The mystery rod is on the bottom or the left.  The 6013 slag is a dull/matte color/texture.  The mystery slag is more shiny and smooth.  The mystery rod seemed to burn away faster and I ended up using about 1/4" more rod.  May just be my lack of skill too. The more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:looking at the slag and the crater at the end id say its a 6013....or 7014....id say its in the F2 group.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:I'd almost guess it's 6013 by the looks of the slag, and coating.  All the 7014 I've seen has a dark brown coating on it.The surprising thing is the burnoff rate.  That sounds like a fast deposition rod like 7014.  OOps, I thought he said 1/4 OF  the rod, not 1/4 INCH.My totally uneductated ignorant guess is 6013"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Without a flash, this is the color difference in the coatings on the rods I have.Still doesn't really answer the question though.  It's a stumper.  Hell, just use 'em, and forget about it unless it's a critical thing. Reply:It definetly does not look like 7014 flux.  I did some welding today on a project using both rods and couldn't tell any real difference.  As best I can tell its just 6013, maybe in some other box.  Im done worrying about it.  6013 works plenty well for what I do and is cheap.  Thanks to all for your input, much appreciatedThe more I learn, the more I realize I dont know squat
Reply:I did some searching, found Industial Alloys link.  They make specialty wire stuff yet today.  The box is printed like some of the stuff I used to sell when I sold "Maintenance Welding Alloys"  (AKA - high dollar welding rod).  I've got a suspicion it's nothing more that like others mention, either a 60 or 70 series rod.  The company I used to work for marketed one that was supposed to razzle dazzle the welding world.  Nothing more than a 7014 in disguise with a different number and markings.  Also, a hugh different price because it was a Specialty Maintenance Welding Alloy.  Yeh, right. As Sam say,  Go ahead and use em.  Just don't put them on a customer's job.
Reply:A possible solution would be to send a letter via "snail mail" to Industrial Alloys co.,Chicago, Illinois 60626.  The zip should get it delivered if they still exist.  Not everything is on the net.Last edited by Nitesky; 02-23-2009 at 09:45 AM.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
