I am wondering if anyone makes a second pass with 6010 or 6011 rod without removing the flux from the previous pass. I am wondering because the slag is hard to remove completely and the rods are so aggressive it seems like it wouldn't matter.
Reply:I've always just used a file or saw blade and then a wire hand brush.  I've also used a power wire wheel to really clean the welds up.  Neither takes much time and this will give you a good look at your weld before you put on your next pass.  But, to answer your question, 6010 will weld back through the slag from the previous pass.Local 597 PipefittersCertified stick and tig pipe welderLincoln Ranger 305g - for saleMiller 185 migMiller Digital Elite
Reply:ive tried this before without clearing the lower level of slag and got perosity bad!
Reply:The flux on a 6010 rod doesn't melt until around 3400 degrees, give or take a degree of five, that makes it virtually impossible for you to burn the flux out of a weld, being that the steel has a much lower melting point around 2600-2800 degrees or so, at least thats what I was always taught.
Reply:I just clean it, either with a wire wheel, or with the chipping hammer, then brush, then pick, then brush.  I like everything to be clean before the next pass, regardless of what rod it is, or wire, if fluxcore.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:If the weldment can take the abuse, I've been known to use a needle gun for rapid aggressive slag removal.
Reply:banana knifes work great too... a little short lived tho I just have a spare grinder with a wire wheel on it for slag removal.. You cant really burn the slag away too easily, If its ever xray'd you will have mad wagon tracks.
Reply:Years a go,  a job superintendent told me he had passed many X-tests without chipping the 6010 root/hot passes. I've seen his work and believe him.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:I don't use 6010 much, but I clean EVERYTHING with a wire wheel or hand wire brush unless the slag comes right off like when using 7018.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:If your having that much difficulty removing slag you are probably running with your volts too low in relation to your amps. A needle gun or wire wheel on a grinder should be all you need to remove the slag."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." -- Seneca the Younger
Reply:A good ol' chipping hammer always does the trick
Reply:On fillet welds I find I can just use the wire brush and the slag would come off easy (the slag seemed almost powder like on the weld).  In open root I would have to work a little harder to get the slag off the toes of the welds,  maybe sharpen the pointy end of my chipping hammer or use a small cold chistle or small flat head screw driver.
Reply:I pretty much use a wire wheel to clean all my welds before passes.  As far as I am concerned there is no reason to NOT remove slag between passes.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:If it's just a fillet I rake it off with my next rod, and weld.  If its X-ray I clean everything with wire wheel."I'd rather be careful a hundred times as killed once"
Reply:On pipe the root gets the grind with a cutoff disc, 10" pipe takes about 15 seconds a side to grind, then a wire wheel for the rest of the runs.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:They already covered it pretty well. The only thing I can add is how critical is the weld? If it's a critical repair or x-ray, cleaning the weld is always in your best interest. Another thing I've not seen in this forum ( I'm new and haven't even began to read them all!) is change of ambient temperature. I once built extensive corrals for some ostriches. Don't ask! Anyway, the point is I used 6010 only, didn't cap with low- high. It was hot summertime and two passes of 5/32 on 2 3/8" used oilfild pipe seemed sufficient. I wire brushed between passes but wasn't real diligent. What the hell? It's just corrals. First hard freeze, a majority of my welds BROKE. Pipe layin' all over the ground. I'd been welding 20 yrs by then, but hadn't picked up the fact that ambient temps would affect a weld like that. I definately clean between passes now. I use low-high to cap, too.
