Some fab work on my bike

I'm trying to hide the tube's that I had cut by boxing them in.chicken poop here 22ga I gave upWent and got some 3/16 plate...this I can work withtry that with a torch(I say that cause I don't have one)Drilling for the seat postEven I can weld thatThe far right weld was vert up,only took one to find out vert down is flatter

Reply:Yes... .  first pic shows I tried 22 ga...that was way too thin.I thought is was 1/8" because 2 were stuck together when I bought it.3/16 plate is way better to weld.By the time the motor is bolted back to iy and battery tray is in you really will not even see it.

Reply:So, As I see it, you are using your original Harley frame and have added a after market hardtail and are trying to hide those unsightly tube ends? I think what everyone is concerned with is welding on a motor vehicle of any type, car, truck, motorcycle requires a certain level of expertice in fabrication and welding as you life may be at stake. That said, it seems OK to do cosmetic welds as it appears this is, but on structural, such as the hardtail graft, make sure it done right. Other words, know your limitations. Its looking pretty cool so far, good luck.

Reply:Vince, the later pics you posted make it a lot easier to see what you're doing with the box. Easy enough to understand now that I see it in more dimensions.To help with weld quality, and to reduce the pidgeon poop, grind off the black scale, and bevel the areas to be welded. You will get better penetration, and the welds will wet in better on the edges. Also, from the amount of volcanic action seen, you might want to work with your wire speed to get a more consistent feed rate, and a smoother weld. While I understand the frame is not affected by that welding, that plate is holding the transmission there, and anything cracking or shaking loose will cause a real hazard for you.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:vince - take the time to rework those welds - a sporty is a real Vibey engine - if your welds are close to borderline - which with all due respect- they look like they are in the photos - (again with respect and politeness ) they'll get cracked up pretty good in little time.granted your front and bottom  mount are getting most of the engine vibes - your trans mount takes alot of torque load - it's not likely to come off in one shot - there'salot of bracing in there, but it,ll fracture and could cause misaligment issue with your drive chain  which 'could' be catastrophic if you dont catch it before it happens- the concept looks sound - material choice etc - you just need to get a better weld going. g'luck ! mGotcha Marc......believe it or not under that bead on the left is a pretty decent bead.I was just building it up some.woi2ld   wow some nice looking tins,when I get ready to paint I'll have a few questions for you.coreshotThank you  I only work on it on weekends so ready by spring? will be close.Next up is re mount the motor install chain,so I can mount the oil tank and be sure that it clears.Mount battery traysort wiresThen tear it all back down...check welds and smooth everything upPaint
