I got a jobt building a cargo rack for a friend who needs it to hold about 600 lbs and needs it to fold upright. he also wants short sides with rails. It will to go behind a Nissan Xterra SUV. Please post pictues of your cargo racks or ones you have built and feel free to give any advice. Pictures of the folding/ hinge would be great too.Thanks,-hwstem"The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
Reply:Wow. 600 pounds cantilevered on the back of a small SUV will be quite interesting. Is this supposed to be a receiver mount? You should probably also plan on making some nice weights for the front the SUV so your front wheel will remain on the ground. The weight of the car is probably around 4000 pounds.Good luck.-Jim
Reply:Going to want a class 4 hitch too. Class 3 only has 500lb tongue weight. I'm sure you know that though.
Reply:Yes when he told me how much he needed to hold I was very surprised. Yes it is supossed to mount from the receiver."The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
Reply:I would definetly use a threaded hitch pin to keep it from rattling, minor detail
Reply:Here is mine.  I am sure it would hold that weight (though the tongue weight on my van is 300 lbs, so I wont be trying it)Mine is fixed, and doesn't rotate.  I used 1/4" x 2" x 2" square tubing as the main support.  The two angled 2x2 square tubing pieces are 1/8".  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=cargo+carrierThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:If it was a Straight carrier I would build it but add in the folding part, might as well buy one.http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Hitc...t_Carrier.aspxI have no problem buying something and then modifying it to suit my needs- i.e Higher side rails, tie down hooks etc etc.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:No way that Nissan can handle a 600lb load at the reciever, much less a cantilevered load.  Tell your buddy to get a trailer.
Reply:He told me that may be exagrated and that makes sense because he is going to haul coolers and luggage and with the specs he gave me 600 pounds of coolers will not fit on the cargo rack."The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
Reply:My van tounge limit is 300 lbs, an the carrier I built is about 90 lbs (heavy, but the light weight ones (steel) come in around 50 lbs or so), and 200lbs of stuff would be a lot.  I went camping recently and threw a cooler on it, 5 gallon water jug, table, and other things and it didn't add up to much weight. If you do go about making a custom one, I would make it bigger than what you can buy (to carry odd, large items); otherwise, I would just buy one as was suggested earlier and modify it.One thing I like about mine is the lift I put in it from the hitch.  Many of the ones you buy come straight out of the back with 0 to very little lift.  If I remember, I came out at 60 degrees and put a 8 " lift on it (or around that).  Sure makes a big difference with dips, driveways, and dirt roads.  Haven't ever had a problem with it scraping (though one time I got out and checked and I was within an inch or so of scraping). The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:If you are like me, and just want to build the rack for fun, rather than efficiency, then by all means build it instead of buying it and modifying it.My wife didn't want me to build something recently (I didn't have the time for it anyway), but given the choice, I think I would have built it for fun (would have saved about half of the cost too).I personally enjoy building things and melting metal.  Enjoying what you do can't be bought.  Too bad I don't know what I really want to do for a livingThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:Yes I think it would be fun to build it myself and should add an angle up off the reciver to prevent scraping. You gotta love what you do to be happy. But I'm not a welder for a living I'm only 15 haha I just do side jobs like this."The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
Reply:See my thread  "Big Wagon and Car Carrier "everything is temporary
Reply:I saw him the other day and told him that I cant build one cheaper than buying one. He found a good deal  on one and is going to buy it. He does want me to build a hitch mounted job site box for him in the next  months so that should be a fun build."The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
Reply:some people see it as "i cant build one as cheap"i see it as "i dont want to buy one thats not made the way i want it, and i dont wanna pay anyone to make it that good"
Reply:Thats true but he found just what he wanted."The most important thing about the job is getting the job done"
