I'm considering building a dryer from a piece of galvanized 4" RGS electrical conduit by welding a cap on each end, installing pipe fittings for entrance, exit, and drain. I'm aware of the hazards of welding galvanized material and will take appropriate precautions. A few questions I have are:1) Can black pipe fittings (reducers, couplings, etc.) be welded to mild steel? The working pressure of this dryer will be about 140 psi max.2) What are some practical ways to route the "internal" pipe or tube to centrifugally expel the water from the input pipe? The bad news is there would be nothing internally to remove rust particles, etc.3) Are there some commercially inexpensive dryers available that might be a better idea than making my own (I have not been able to find any so far)?  The throughput need only be about 15 SCFM.Comments and recommendations would be appreciated............james
Reply:You're designing and building a pressure vessel, but from the gist of your questions--you have noidea as to what's involved?Suggest you place this in a stout enclosure, to preventinjury or death in the event of explosion.Blackbird

Reply:There are machined weld-on steel fittings with npt threads available.  But I honestly would not recommend you attempt to build a high pressure (anything over 15lbs) air manifold like your describing out of electrical conduit and pipe fittings.  You are going to end up with a pipe bomb.Try Wilkerson instead, they make industrial grade air filters, regulators and lubricators that I've installed and serviced in several plants.http://www.wilkersoncorp.com/products.aspThe locate a distributor tool says there are 5 reps for your state:FRANK FLORI EQUIPMENT CO., INC2430 NORTHLINE INDUSTRIAL BLVDST LOUIS, MO 63043Ph: 314-432-3393 | www.flori.comNEFF POWER INC.6500 PAGE AVE, ST LOUIS, MO 63133Ph: 314-727-6200 | www.neffpower.comTHE HARTFIEL COMPANYEmail: [email protected] POWER ENGRG. Reply:No you can't weld ductile or maleable iron pipe fittings to anything.  You can weld the forged steel, ASME B16. fittings to most steels, though.
Reply:I worked as a painter in a bodyshop for 14 yrs & used to paint cars out of my garage - this worked like a champ and got ALL the moisture out of my airline. If you already have a half-way decent filter/water separator on your airline - you can make a home made version of a refrigerated line dryer for < $20.The reason moisture gets past most filters/water separators is they are installed too close to the compressor (where the air is warm from the compressor running) as the moisture has not condensed it travels right past the filter/water separator. As it travels down the hose - it cools/condenses and then comes out in droplets (out of your air tool). We need to cool the air (so the moisture will condense) before it gets to the filter/separator - then the filter/separator will be able to properly do it's job.You will need 1 - 5 gal bucket2 - lengths of regular air hose (I had 2 5ft lengths)1 - http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...r-hose-47.html(note - you need this "style" of hose but in 3/8 size!!!)misc couplings to join hoses as neededAssemble the following wayOut of the compressor tank output1st section of hosePVC coil hose2nd section hosefilter/separator (which is mounted on wall)Place the PVC coil in the bucket and fill the bucket up with ice water.Enjoy your moisture free air.

Reply:HIcheck out this site or google (franzinator)http://z6.invisionfree.com/ToolBoxTa...showtopic=1461these hook to the compressor.Or you can use pipe with normal fitting to make a"Z" pattern on the wall with about 30 feet or pipe.  slightly bend the pipe and use elbows to form the "Z".have the compressor in put at the bottom and air out at the top with a drain at the bottom.Use larger pipe 3/4" or 1" to slow the travel of the air it takes about 30 feet to cool the air for the water to drop out of suspention.have funTom
