A friend of mine had the shifter peg on his Harley fall off, and wanted to know if I could come up with something fairly simple. Here is a mock up of what I'll end up doing. This is only 1/2 inch square bar, but the real one will either be 3/4 or 1". The ends will be bit different as well. We're thinking a ball the same diameter as the bar welded and blended onto the end, though he is sorta liking the plain end this mock up has.He is also unsure how he wants to finish it. He has a friend that powder coats, so that is an option. For the mock up I just drew out the temper colors with the torch. The bike is a Harley NightTrain, which has a lot of of matte black on it, and the dark temper colors look pretty decent with it.I have another friend who owns a small lathe, and I plan on having him turn down the thread end, and I'll cut the threads on instead of the welded bolt as in this mock up.Before and afterNothing special, but it is what I'm doing. If it all comes up, might end up doing some matching pegs.OLD miller M-295 (AC)Century 230/140 ac/dcVictor torchNot much else but some cheap tools.
Reply:depending on the size of the ball, & softness of shoes worn or boots, the ball may burt edge of your foot! & cut through soft top boots, YES cut through, it has bappened to me. plain end with at most a slight taper larger towards the end. like heating edge & pressing to make slightly larger.the twist should help keep from sliding & shift smooth.for a foot peg the ball works great, so feet dont slide off the end......also most people dont think of this but when you add weight to shifter, it works on the return spring, & helps to cause it to fail, heel & toe shifters have alot higher failure rates than normal shifters, so if it adds alot of weight it is something to think about.worked on Harleys professionally for many years.Later,RandyMiller 140Campbell Hausfield migVictor torch outfitBlue Point torch setSmith torch with vintage Airco regulatorsVictor type A torch setHobart pipelinerLincoln Ranger 9Lincoln 225 tombstone

Reply:That'll catch some looks for sure. Definitely don't forget about the practicalities of use like Randy mentioned. I wouldn't put a ball on the end for a shifter, it would be towards the lateral edge of the boot which doesn't have the extra toe pad (assuming standard shifter). I might also knock the sharp off the tops of the corners so it doesn't slice the boots when you slide the toe under to shift. It might not be an issue on a cruiser riding style where the controls are forward compared to a standard style that is upright. It changes how the legs/feet move to get into place. I'm just thinking outloud - the actual use might not even display the problem.I do think that blue would look tough on a NighTrain
Reply:Yep that looks great but now he will need matching pegs.I made mine out of rail road spikes...and I like the edge(keeps my boot from sliding off) |
