Difference between short circuit and spray mig welding

First off, I do not weld for a living and the only formal training was a night course I took at the local tech school on how to weld and the different methods. They never spoke about there being two different types of Mig welding, short circuit and spray. Can someone explain to me the difference between the two and does it require a different machine for each?
