Reply:I will second duane. When you think you have something square or you are going to be done in a few minutes then you realize a mistake and have to tear it apart and clean everthing up again!

Reply:I also have to side w/ Duane. As for the drilling, I've had a Milwaukee 1/2" holeshooter for quite a few yrs and I'm always ready for it to hang up at the end of the hole. When I first got it I was drilling a 1/2" hole thru 1/2" plate and it hung and wound me up so tight I could barely get my trigger finger off the switch!                                       MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:I'm also with Duane! I do have to agree that drilling is a PITA! I have alot of experience with drills. I have gotten pretty good (some say magical) at getting broken bits out. I have found that using an air drill reduces the wrist yank when drilling and getting to the break through point.
Reply:Drilling sucks. Grinding sucks. But, to me, dealing with customers is one of the worst parts of fabrication work.  Some customers are great, but many of them are just awful to deal with.I would rather be drilling and grinding at the same time than trying to explain to someone that I am not running a charity but rather a business, and that I do not work for FREE.

Reply:Hey guys,I gotta go with Duane & Zaps' responses. I like the post about "measure twice...cut once. As far as prepping, like Zap, I am not fond of having to clean a disgusting piece to get a good repair that could have been done by the owner. I have found, many times, all that garbage that needs cleaned will also reveal additional damage not observed by the owner. Then the customer growls because it is going to cost more than originally anticipated. Just last week I had (3) large mower decks come in for repairs......Yup.....none had been cleaned. 1-3" of deck mulch hardened & rotting.....stinkin' mold. Yes, & (2) of them had additional damage hiding under the mulch. I made sure each customer saw all the repair that was needed prior to my starting. If they would have decided against the repair, they would have gotten a $25 charge for the cleaning of the repair area. Didn't have any complaints or problems....good customers.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Measuring something perfectly and then when I transfer it to Cadd, I forget a whole object. Everything is precise, everything is perfect, except I forget to draw in a whole step, or double check a length of a diagonal, and I am off by a foot or more. It is just perfectly wrong. I actually brought a rail one time to a guys house, sweetly powder coated. Laid it on the stoop, going to chalk it for diamond coring. It looked like just another perfect fit, so level. Then I looked left and it was short exactly one step. I just laughed and said I would see him in a few days with a new one. We both got a laugh out of it. But that burns my biscuits.        Sincerely,             William McCormick

Reply:I hate my shop... its a 4 car garage that's. Way too damn packed for me. I guess some of its my fault for hoarding junk, and every time I step over it, instead of doing something with it, telling myself I'm going to use it, put it on craigslist, etc. Add a taken apart farm tractor, a couple garden tractors, a dead air compressor, tires, wheels and rims, tractor parts, truck parts, a month of sandblasting to cover everything in dust, and a few cats (I HATE barn cats) and its really not a nice place to work.

Reply:heavy grinding sucks a$$. i really hate having to grind down long plate and big heavy pipe. not a big fan of drilling either. when i first started my first welding job at a fab shop i had to drill alot of holes with the old #7 for a 1/4-20 bolts. ya know bad **** always happens on fridays, and this was the day after my youngest daughter was built. i was drilling my last hole for the day and was too lazy to change or sharpen the bit i guess, so i was pulling with one arm and pushing the drill with the other when snap, next thing i knew my forearm was hamburger........nice i know
