Canadian or US jobs

I'm a boilermaker here in australia and have decided I'd like to try something different. So I was wondering how hard it would be to get work in Canada or America. My work experience is in onsite works on coal plant and draglines as well as heavy fabrication. I'm leaning more towards Canada because it's supposed to be easier to get a visa because its a commonwealth country but other than that I would have no idea on how to apply for visas or even where to look for jobs. So would anyone out there have any info?ThanksBen.

Reply:This is very interesting to me considering I went to an Australian Job fair not to long ago. They are trying to recruit Skilled trade workers including Boilermakers and welders. They explained the whole Visa process to us and here you are trying to come here.

Reply:They are in the process of changing the immigration rules here in Canada.  It was a point system that gave people with useless doctorate degrees the upper hand.  The government has realised they need skilled trades and will be changing the rules in the near future.
Reply:Pokerguy, It's an interesting situation. It would appear the mines don't want to hire local workers. As a boilermaker everyone tells me how everyone is looking for boilies but I'm damned if I can find the jobs. I looked on one of the biggest online job boards and there weren't even 20 jobs on there. I tend to think its about the mines trying to de-unionise the workforce. You just have to look at the situation with BMA. They have closed a whole mine because of it. At the moment I'm doing shutdowns on draglines but that work can be a bit patchy. My crew just lost 12 weeks work because we had 4 safety incidences on a 10 week shut. It's that cut throat. It aggravates me so much when I hear about the so called skills shortage. Lotechman, I remember years ago I was looking at going to canada and I remember the points thing. From memory the only thing that was really holding me back was my lack of french. It would be good if the relax the criteria for us 'brainless tradies'.Dellwas, Thanks for the link.
