First off I like to build useful things out of scrapped metal and am something of an HF junkie. I am a retired AF engineer and flyer and am "following my dream" so to speak.. I have always wanted to try building a trailer out of a scrapped out mobile home, so I am presently working on a 8' x18" flatbed trailer. I have the main frame 90% done, using 10"x3"x3/16" I-beam for the frame with I-beams sectioned the long way for cross braces, and 3"x6"x1/4" angle for the tongue. The main frame is 5' wide and I will be using triangle shaped pieces cut from more of the I-beam for "outriggers" every 2' to extend the width to 8'. Then I will weld 2"x3" angle on the four sides of the frame to support the 2"x6" and 2"x12" floor. The axles will be 6'-6" from tire outside to outside and will be under the floor rather than outboard of it. I am still making up my mind about axles. I have two house trailer axles with brakes but need two more tires. I built a 16' and an 8' trailer using them and had no problems with either but they are a pain to work with. This trailer is destined to be donated to a local Buddhist temple. I am helping them put up a new temple, 40'x60' x 30' tall, out of steel and they will need the trailer to haul materials to finish out the building after the red iron is up. The hauls will be short and in the county so I am making the trailer 7000# gross wt.If I go with commercial axles I will put brakes in one axle only. Pix later if my ISP will let me. Only tool that has been problematic has been the Simadre. Received first two units DOA. Third one works fine but I changed out the leads, ground clamp, stinger, and regulators. This has been my one regret buying chinese though my reason for purchasing was to have an AC/DC TIG (learning) and a backup stick. Haven't used the plasma yet. If the machine crumps I will send it to Parker and let them upgrade it as they did my awesome plasma cutter
Reply:That sounds like a fun project - one thing I found out while rebuilding my 10Klb trailer was that by law in Virginia if I have brakes on one axle I have to have them on both. Reply:Texas only requires one braked axle for the size I am building, at least. I have a commercial trailer set up that way, fully licensed. I do need a breakaway controller though. TX does not require any of this for a "farm" registered trailer, however.I forgot to mention that the only downside I have come across so far with this project is that the trailer frames are coated with a thin tar-like material for rustproofing, which makes things a little messy.One thing that has become obvious even though I was aware it was the case is just how hard weld joints are compared to the base mild steel material. I've been using the angle grinders with cutoff wheels (DeWalt and Norton) and they sure let you know when they are in weldments. The original welds on the frames are suprizingly not any better than mine, passable but certainly not pipeline quality.Steve |
