Just wondering if anyone here has ever built a dumptrailer or modifed a utility trailer into a dumptrailer?I have a 5x10 morganbilt utility trailer that I would like to turn into a dumper. Any ideas would be helpfull but the one problem I am grappling with is what size or length of hyd. cylinder to use or the placement of said cylinder! Or a forward facing cylinder. Most dumpers I have seen on the internet have rearward facing cylinders.Pictures would be most helpfull, I have a few ideas floating around in my head but any new or different thoughts would help greatlyThanksGaryLast edited by katana1150; 08-30-2010 at 02:50 PM.
Reply:I found a full dump set up at a surplus place that buys and sells Caltran (Calif) trucks etc. It came from about a 3 yard dump. It has what looks like a 12v starter motor, a pump attached to that, a reservoir for the hydraulic fluid and two good size rams, maybe 3" x 24" to 50-55" extended ,some electrical stop/limit switches, an on/off switch. You might find one near you? Course, then U gotta get the trailer strength up, make a bed, etc... and there are guys on here that do that correctly all the time. Meanwhile, I keep looking for a short tandem trailer frame with brakes to start... been looking for awhileenjoy,Last edited by PapaLion; 08-30-2010 at 04:06 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:Unless you really like to build stuff, just buy one. It's cheaper. That said, here's my thread. Hopefully you'll find some good info there. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=33239My name's not Jim....

Reply:Boostinjdm, I think $ wise UR right... unless a fella gets a real good deal on the materials/axles etc and then does NOT figure his time, which a pro cannot avoid. Also, trailer building I have learned here is not for everyone, it is a specialized art... When I got my hydraulics etc I had not ever seen WW. So now, I just hold my stuff and watch for the right heavy duty trailer... then I'll throw myself at the mercy of WW and get some direction. The one BSOK built is about what most folks have in mind, I think. Nice job and a good final $. How many hours of fabrication might be another whole question.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:We had a bunch of hours in that project. We also did it in phases as $$$ allowed. My Brothers and I took it on as a challenge more than anything. We wanted a dump trailer and there was no way we could dish out that $$$$ for one. We saw a few used ones for sale but you never know what you are getting into. Most had been used hard by landscaping company's or contractors and had not been maintained. Leaky hoses, bent gates, faulty wiring, and questionable wheel bearings seemed to be common. We figured we would start a new project of our own instead of taking on someones.BrianLincoln Mig 215Miller 211Victor Torch SetMiller Maxstar 200SDMiller Syncrowave 250DX Tig runnerMiller Trailblazer 302 running on LPMiller Extreme 12 VS SuitcaseEllis 1600 BandsawMiller xmt350 CC/CVLincoln Vantage 300

Reply:Green thing is part of the bracket that holds our Leaf Vac. Lesco LTL 160 Truck Loader. We had a smaller leaf vac that we made a receiver hitch mount for. This one is much heavier so we built the swing open doors to hold the weight. They also allow is to swing the machine out of the way for dumping. Reply:Originally Posted by BSOKI hit the scales at the dump with about 4000lbs of wet leaves last season. My brother had several yards of topsoil for his garden in her this spring but I have no idea what that weighed. The axles are 7000lb each with electric brakes. The plans said the dump capacity was 10k. I really don't care to test the max cause if she doesn't tilt then we got some shoveling to do.
Reply:BSOK,Nice Trailer, and Nice Build...From the 1st pic in Post #13, I would give you 2 Thumbs-Up for the proper use of appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment - Glasses, Gloves, Sleeves etc), but I am left wondering WHY a Safety Conscientious Person such as yourself, would NOT run a guard on an Angle Grinder? I don't really buy the arguement that they "Get in the way" for the simple fact that I run cut down (120° sweep) OSHA Compliant Guards on ALL of my Angle Grinders, and haven't had to remove one in several YEARS.Your mileage may vary.Sorry to "Nitpick" - Just a friendly reminder to keep newcomers safe.Later,Jason
Reply:Black WolfGuilty as charged. That one had a guard at one time. It was flimsy and would not stay in place correctly so in the trash it went. Hopefully the replacement for that old makita will come with a better constructed guard. I've got my eye on a few of the Milwaukee and Hilti units.Stay safe.BrianBrianLincoln Mig 215Miller 211Victor Torch SetMiller Maxstar 200SDMiller Syncrowave 250DX Tig runnerMiller Trailblazer 302 running on LPMiller Extreme 12 VS SuitcaseEllis 1600 BandsawMiller xmt350 CC/CVLincoln Vantage 300 |
