I havnt posted anything in a long time. I've been working for a company for 2 years building excavator mounted drills. We run 1\16th dual shield flux core and we have to push it for 1 and they want us to use a whipping motion like you would with 6010. Is this a problem that can cause weaker wlds or should I not be concerned. We are building drills with more torque now and it has me wondering. Thanks TJ
Reply:I have a couple sayings that I tell my students:1. If your boss likes it, you love it.2. Whenever anybody says "In welding, you NEVER do [i]" remove the word "NEVER" and replace it with "MOST OF THE TIME".You CAN push FCAW-G successfully in-position, but like GMAW-S you are going to get less penetration.  Perhaps their weld procedure accounts for this.  Also in regards to the whipping motion; I worked for a structural steel fabricator using 1/16 FCAW-G and we did a slight whip back into the puddle to achieve the proper weld size in a single pass (5/16 horizontal fillets)Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2Jay DavisAWS-CWIC-60 Specialty Welding ContractorLoving husband, and father of two boys (
Reply:I always try to run in the drag position but you can push it.     Pushing lowers penetration but improves production, but really ups the chances for slag inclusions and Lack of fusion.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I encountered serious slag inclusion at the root by pushing dual shield at a job once. I never would have known or guessed it... only reason I found out was because it was a full penetration weld which required grinding all the slag out of the backside before capping the back.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:That's been my big fear is I'm gonna trap slag and have issues. I try and stay straight to the plate so I'm not pushing as much but its not always that way. And they're cool with different motions if you just give yyour bead some sort of ripple. We mostly run 3\8 and 1\2 inch fillet welds in the 1f position. I was just thinking about it on my drive home the other day. Any more tips would be awesome. Thanks TJ
