I going to add a fire box to my old (built in 1986) 250 gal grill.  I have built them before but used 40 gal propane tanks.  I am going to make this one square using either 1/4" or 3/16" (cost will play a factor) steel. Has anyone built a square fire box for a 250 gal that would share their design with me? Pictures and size would be nice.  If you would prefer to email me that would be great. Thanks and have a great Labor Day weekend. Randy
Reply:I built a smoker from a 100 gal propane tank. For the square firebox I had the metal supplier bend a piece of 1/8 in into a C for the top, right and left side. I didn't do this but the back and bottom should be bent into an L.  I had individual plates for the back and bottom but that makes for a s#$@ load of welding. Just weld that together leaving the front open. I then framed the front with 1/2 in angle then welded 1/8 x 2" flat stock behind that. The door panel is a sheet that I just cut to fit the opening, framed with more 1/8 x 2.  I cut the draft holes as shown in the pics. I cut the tank opening and welded the box to the tank from the inside. From what I understand, the box should be 1/3 the volume of the cooker. There are firebox size calculators available on the web. If I can find the link I used I'll post it up.  This one works perfect. Usually, I have to have the draft holes almost closed to keep it at 225 degrees. Takes very little wood. Hope this helps.
