Reply:the 1/4 inch plate is pretty so im using this hoist to move and position the piece as i weld on it. Attached Images
Reply:i welded this hoop onto the plate to lift and turn the piece as i move along. Attached Images
Reply:old chop saw im using to cut my corner posts for the railing. they will be 3*3 tubing while rails will round pipe. Attached Images
Reply:this is under side done the two channels where the forks go. hit it with some primer. the skid plates underneath are also 1/4 inch plate. Attached Images
Reply:thats as far as ive got so far will be doing more on sunday. thanks! also im useibng a lincoln 180c mig welder to do the welding and a old black and decker chop saw for railing used a victor 1350 torch to cut the plate. a 7.5 amp dewalt grinder for grinding.Last edited by dyrvale; 08-28-2010 at 07:42 AM.
Reply:Just wondering-Will forks be sliding into pockets(rectangular tubing) toprevent platform from tipping/ sliding off forks?Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite

Reply:ive made one before, we used r.h.s just big enough for the forks to fit in and welded them to the bottom side of our floor plate, we then used a bit of 100mm x 5mm flatbar as a kick rail all around the bottom of the floor and meshed in the sides made from boxtube.i'd also be putting in a couple of holes to match the holes on your forks to drop some pins in to help it sliding off just as a precaution

Reply:well got my two side rails put together. yeah ive been considering wether to use the pin holes or some kinda pin set up on the mast to lock it in place. yeah i have some flat bar to run around the floor so everytime u drop a bolt it doesnt fall all the way to the floor. lol! thatd suck! Reply:and i wish there was a alarm system on the mig regulator lol to remind me to turn the stupid bottle off!! lol lost my gas again! lol! il leran someday i geuss!
Reply:well got the two side rails welded onto the skid. Attached Images
Reply:here's a couple of the corner post welds. pics a little fuzzy its my cell phone lol! Attached Images
Reply:well i finallt got some more done got the back rail pieced in and the lip around the bottom! time to come up with a gate for the front! lol! not sure on how to put that together yet. Attached Images
Reply:heres a rail weld on the pipe. in the above i also ran out of flat bar for the lip so i cut a pipe in half long ways and used it on the sides for a ledge. worked out well. used a hypertherm 1000 to make the cut rather than a torch to minimize warpage on the pipe halfs. Attached Images
Reply:To make OSHA happy, the part towards the mast has to be screened so that the person in the basket has no chance of contacting moving parts and it has to be chained, pinned is probably OK, so that it can't come off unintentionally. We have a "bought" man basket and it is a flimsy POS, but it satisfies the inspectors.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:well got my gate installed onto the cage time for some finish grinding. still need to build a latch for the gate. and a hook up for the mast. and some paint lol! Attached Images" All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." Edgar Allan Poe
Reply:here's another view i also have some caps for the corner posts coming from a friend at the ornamental iron place. Attached Images" All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." Edgar Allan Poe
Reply:osha wants the door to swing to the inside of the basket so theirs no chance of someone leaning against it and falling out.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.Toeboards are listed as minimum 3-1/2 inches above the platform, optional 1/4 inch drainage space underneath is allowed. I don't think your half-pipe pieces are that tall.See also that OSHA 'passes the buck' in that a forklift must be rated to lift personel by the manufacturer before it can be used to lift personel.http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owad...ONS&p_id=23331and http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owad...ONS&p_id=21322and alsohttp://osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp....ONS&p_id=24877which references ASME B56.1-2000 and also OSHA 1910.31 for fall protection requirements.OSHA 1910.178 applies to Powered Industrial TrucksI think your -idea- of being safer than just standing on a wooden pallet on a forklift, which is all SORTS of unsafe and OSHA violations, is certainly good and commendable. However, there are various sorts of requirements and regulations that have to be met, even for a Commendable-Idea. Reply:Who is this osha person u speak of? lol should i ever meet them its seems il get to rebuild my lift cage lol! im glad to know whats supposed to be there if i get some scraps to work with il make some modifications. im also assuming this lift is probably supposed to be buildt bye a licence professional and not a hobbie welder in his spare time? yikes! i geuss if it gets the thumbs down i can flip it over cut the runners off and use it as a welding table!!! thanks for the info guys i really never woulda thought of all that stuff! i appreciate knowing what i got wrong it'll make me better in the long run! Reply:hey moonrise if i got some flat bar or angle iron and added it on top of the half pipe to equal the hight. would that be acceptable? or is the gap for drainage neccasary osha wise? i found a long piece of 2.5 inch angle iron in our shed i could weld it onto the half pipe and get the required hight. was just curios it would be a easy fix cut the angle iron long wise makein to pieces o flat bar essentially. the plasma would be good for that." Reply:The drainage gap under the toeboards is optional but allowed. And regarding your meeting an OSHA inspector, it sounds like you or your company would be in big DooDoo if such a meeting occurred. Most likely to the tune of at -least- THOUSANDS of dollars of safety fines. OSHA -likes- to levy fines. Some folks here have mentioned their 'wonderful' meetings with OSHA.Sometimes the 'safety violations' are pretty much 'just' paperwork related, but still add up to thousands of dollars in fines for the business.Sometimes the safety violations really -are- problems.Sometimes various OSHA and SafetyPatrol types seem to somehow live in their own little world with their often conflicting safety requirements or safety requirements that interfere with being able to work. Reply:yeah ive mention the osha possibilities to the higher ups. for some reason no one listens. geuss its gonna be a trial bye fire thing someday. and il get the told u so satisfaction. i have been upgrading my entire dept. trying to get my area at least closer to a safe place to work. but you can only do so much much when the people running the show wont listen. sad" All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."
