I picked up an welding bottle filled with 75-25 mix....the guy I got it from indicated it had been sitting unused for many years.  My questions are how long can a bottle sit before the gases separate? What are the signs that the gas has separated? And, can or is it possible to remix the gases in the bottle once separation has taken place? Thanks fro your help

Reply:We would lay them on their side and roll them down the hall for about 50 yards total. There are gases that when mixed are stable and will not readily separate, then there are blended gases that have lots of different weights in them and will readily separate over time. I would go out on a limb saying a 75/25 bottle will never separate. But roll it anyways.
Reply:Take it to the local paint store and get em to put it in the paint mixer/shaker.
Reply:They won't separate. The earth's atmosphere is a mixture of many gases, and it NEVER separates, not even over millions of years.Only way to separate out gases is to cool them down to critical temperature, into liquids, which is how commercial pure gases are produced. It may be amusing to suggest you strap the cylinder onto your back and have some wild sex, which will make you feel really good, but the gas will not benefit in the least.Cheers,  Tony._________________________________Transmig 310 + Argoshield LightOxy acetyleneOxy propanePrehistoric stick welder_________________________________

Reply:Add a good surfactant (soap or detergent) to the bottle.
Reply:Post #15 here is something to think about. It has to do with separation due to the partial pressure and cold weather.  http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtal...read.php?11056"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Use the Fat Chick Method, which agitates and warms the cylinder.
Reply:The bigggest key to getting the gases to mix properly is that the LWS that filled it needs to use a dip tube on the cylinder, if no dip tube is present you will not get a consistent mix, the LWS I work at has always dip tubed Argon/Co2 cylinders, but I know for a fact years ago some of our competitors got away from dip tubing to save costs, back in 2003 I got phone calls from two accounts that were not customers of mine, they were complaining of the mix in there gases from another supplier, I brought in a portable analyzer to the one account, and tested 2 full cylinders, and 4 cylinders from the empty rack, all 6 cylinders were out of spec, the cylinders that were in the empty rack still had 500-600 psi in them!  When I asked the weld supervisor why there were cylinders still in the rack with 25% product left, he told me that the welders complain that the mix starts off fine, then it goes to crap at the end of the cylinder, I did not tell him that his supplier was not using dip tubes, just brought in my cylinders for a test, and they switched all there business to me,. once the owner of the second account heard of this, he wasn't even interested in having me analyze his cylinders, he just wanted to know how soon we could deliver. Don't be afraid to ask your LWS if they dip tube there Argon/Co2 cylinders. If they do not, move on to the next supplier.
