Had a guy drop this off to me today, and before I do a spark test I am going to pose the ??? here first, this is a vise from an automoive place down the road and they broke it using a monster cheater. Anyways what material are they usually, and if it is cast steel I have some 71xx dual shield in my machine will it work if beveled and I pre and post heatVisions SteelWasilla Alaskahttp://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...5&l=c32ed1320fwelderstourchessawsgrinders
Reply:id put that to bed or sell your parts or buy the ones you need
Reply:you can weld it, but its gonna break again (cause a monster cheater pipe is gonna get used again)nothing fancy, just a few hot glue guns for metalwww.sicfabrications.com
Reply:It looks like one of the Chin vises. They are usually made out of martinsitic steel, a blend of cast iron and steel. I would use a cast iron butter rod. I had a repair on a Kubota tractor that was martinsitic and the info guys at United Technologies Products in Germany, told me to use their 85FN rods. The repair looked good and worked well and is still holding many years later.
Reply:Even if you could fix it for less than the $70.00  it would cost at HF,     http://www.harborfreight.com/5-inch-...ise-67415.html. You would have a very hard time keeping the jaws square and true, and, as others said, have to stand behind the repair.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Use the 7018 trick. Make a small tack on the piece then take a file and file the tack. If the tack is soft then cast steel and if it's hard it's cast iron.
Reply:I bought a broken vice just like yours ~see picture (broke same place)at auction 3 yr ago for $5.00I don't know if if is steel or CI however I suspect semi-steel.I just beveled and welded up with 7018 stick.really burned it in! This repair has held up for me for three yrs lots of use ,yes with abuse pounding and yes a cheater (but a small one)If this was for a customer I would not gaurantee the repair but think it would hold?Good Luck Bob Attached ImagesLast edited by doxie; 09-12-2010 at 02:51 PM.Reason: added pictThermal Arc T-Bird 270 Amp gas welder Thermal Arc Pro Wave 185PowerArc 200 Riland 60 PlasmaMiller suitcase 12vs wire feeder, 180 Amp Diesel Welder GenEllis 1600 bandsawImig 205 Mig,Eastwood 250 migLincoln 250 G9 Pro gas Weldanpower

Reply:Yours looks like cast iron to me by the grain of the fracture. You can buy fancy rods for cast but this worked for me.I was working part time in a body shop back in high school.  The owner brought in a record #6 mechanics vise which is definitely cast iron, sliding jaw broken just like yours except square.  I asked if he was going to weld it and he said no, that I was.He coached me through it, plenty of preheat, then brazing with O/A and then post heating to slowly cool down the piece.I ran into that guy a few months ago and he told me the vice was still being used and hadn't let go which would be over 30 years ago.For the preheat and postheating, a gas barbecue is a great help.  Go ahead and weld it, if it doesn't work out it's still broke same as now, you have nothing to lose."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:The nothing to lose argument isn't entirely true.  What if the vise fails while holding a valuable part like a cylinder head or something?  Then that part could potentially fall and break.  But, go ahead and braze it.  It will be good practice and shouldn't cost you any more than $10-20 in material.

Reply:i would persoanlly braze it, bevel it right down and fill it right up and have it machined. The main issue with welding cast with stick electrodes is getting as stated previous dilution of the base material with weld metal. Ive brazed castings up to 3" thick, one in particular being a high pressure hatch on a 2000psi compressor. Do you correct pre and post heat welding procedures and their is no reason that cannot be repaired.
