I plan on puttin a 6 foot by 3 foot gate in my backyard going into the alley way. I plan on putting two post on each side of the door. The post are rectangular tubing 4 x 2 inches. And I plan on making the door out of 2 inch square tubing. I just need some suggestions on types of hinges I should get. Dont know if I should make my own or what. Also couldnt find any weldable slide bolts. Any suggestions? Or has anybody fabricated there own hinges and slide bolts? Thanks
Reply:You might try this website: www.gosteel.com. They have hinges and slide bolts.
Reply:Here is the kind of hinges that the gates at my house use.  The best thing about them is that you can adjust them so that the gate can be trued up after installation, as well as moved closer or farther out from the support post.I am not sure what the bolt part is called with the 90 turn in it, i bought them from a local custom gate maker.  On a small side gate I just finished I made my own piece that it mated to out of 3/16" steel but its similar to the one in the pic, just drilled out the hole with a 1/2" bit
Reply:Not sure if you have a Tractor Supply Store or some sort of farm supply close by but they have those type hinges.  I have bought them there before for projects I have done around the house.  Hope this helps.
Reply:That's an adjustable j-bolt hinge, available in zinc plated or hot-dip galvanized.  The part that welds to the metal post that the j-bolt drops into is called a bat wing.  It looks like a piece of light gauge stamped c-channel with the legs pointing down (or up, for the bottom hinge) with a hole punched through the web.  You can get the j-bolts and bat wings at any decorative/wrought-iron fence supplier.  Check www.kingmetals.com or www.bullsteelntube.com or www.metalamore.com.Sounds like that will be a rather heavy gate.  You may want to use greasable barrel hinges or heavy duty piano hinges instead of adjustables.Last edited by DesertRider33; 09-13-2010 at 08:58 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks for suggestions. Yea Im thinking the door will easily weight 50-75 lbs. So im thinking about getting heavy duty hinges. Just dont want my hinges to be weak for the door. Has anybody made there own latch or hinges?
Reply:Slide bolt latches (horizontal between double gates, or vertical into the ground) are easy to make.  Use 1/2" or 5/8" solid round bar and some 1-1/2" or 2" angle (and some flat bar if you want it to lock).  If you look at any slide bar latch for a few seconds, the design is self explanatory.  Barrel hinges can be made with pipe and solid round bar.  Any latches or hinges beyond those, it's much cheaper to buy them than make them, if you consider the time into making them, since they're generally so cheap $$ pre-made.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:ohh yeah, disregard the weld quality...this was actually one of my first two times using my TIG...I've gotten better since then (these were built about 4 years ago).--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:These are the hinges I built.I used DIN 444 bolt ( http://www.ekotherma.sk/en/spoj_mat/...3/DIN444_v.jpg ), piece of pipe, piece od 6mm plate and long nut ( http://www.advancebolts.com/uploads/.../DSCF0047W.JPG ) that i welded inside of pipe.
Reply:NICE!!! Yall give me a good idea. Just dont know if it will hold the weight. I just dont want to make anything weak.

Reply:Just so you know, those hinges I posted are holding up what I would estimate to be a 200-300lb gate.  Each side had a span of 8 or or 10' (dont remember off the top of my head) and for size reference the outer tubing is 2x2 and the the gate is 6' tall.  It has been in place for 2 years now without a problem.  I believe the J bolts are 1/2" hot dipped galvanized.  This gate was installed by a local company that does gates, so I figure they know what they are doing since they have been in business since the 70's
