FREE chain links

I love using chain links as bungee tie-down rings, hooks, multi-purpose hanger rings, etc.......     Example:  I welded a bunch around my hitch rack for tie-down rings.Here's the tip for those who don't know:go to the local farm store and/or hardware store that sells the "cut-your-own-length" chain.  They will most likely have a bucket with the "waste" links.  Most places throw these away after they accumulate.   Just ask a store manager if you can have them.  I have never been told 'no'.  These links can be bent back to round in a vise, or cut in half / trimmed with bolt cutters if needed.If you're lucky, you can get a lifetime supply of them in one trip.(If anyone else has any tips for 'free crap' please post.) Reply:The full links work well, but the 1/2 links really don't have enough surface area to get a solid weld for much more than bunge cords (unless you are using them as hooks rather than loops). Ratchet straps will regularly pull them right off after most people weld them on. If you want to use the 1/2 links the best way is to drill 2 holes that mate with the link, insert the link and plug weld the link from the back as well as weld on the front..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
